re: Mirvish 2009 / 2010

Moustache?

Could that be some hint as to a possible show choice?
#52

re: Mirvish 2009 / 2010

The moustache is in reference to the Kaiser Wilhelm II who had Frank Wedekind (the writer of Spring Awakening - the original play) put in jail in 1898. This was explained in the Mirvish email regarding when SA tickets were going on sale.

Oh okay. I've been away, so I just got the SA email this morning

re: Mirvish 2009 / 2010

My best guesses for 2009/10 are motivated partly by inside sources, informed rumors and some sheer guesswork. I think it's a fairly likely set of shows, although I'm sure I won't be proved 100% right.

First of all, this season will have a surprising seven shows.

- Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (RAT - Nov 09)
- Fiddler on the Roof (Canon - Winter 09)
- Mary Poppins (Canon? - ?)
- The 39 Steps (Canon? - ?)
- Stuff Happens (Panasonic - ?)
- August: Osage County (Canon? - ?)
- War Horse (Canon? - ?)

So, as you can see it's only the first two that are fairly certain, the rest are all rumors and conjecture. We'll find out on the 17th... or should I say the 16th when Dick Ouzounian lets the cat out early as per usual.

Two more things: Mary Poppins seems like even the touring version would be too big for the Canon's tiny stage. And, if Dirty Dancing closes in August as is the talk, is two months enough time to turn the theatre around and do rehearsals? It'll be tight!

Thoughts and counter-guesses?

re: Mirvish 2009 / 2010

jmorrison, if what you say is true, I will be honest...not going to subscribe. I think I would rather wait to get single tixs. I want to see all shows except 'War Horse' and 'Stuff Happens'.

Where is Wicked? I'm guessing it will be a bonus show?

The Royal Alex stage to me looks smaller than the Canon stage...maybe becuase the Canon's house seems so wide and big to me, that the Royal Alex seems tight, and close.

I will be the first to say...Dancap's season *should* be interesting. Like one of my previous posts...

Possibly:

-In the Heights
-Legally Blonde
-Xanadu
-Grease

Now I would subscribe to that^^^^...although Dancap wants both arms and legs for tickets. P.S. Does anyone know the date that Dancap will announce a new series? Or will they not do that b/c all their shows *seem* so far off?

re: Mirvish 2009 / 2010

The Canon's backstage space is extremely limited while the Alex is larger. Having said that, the Alex will still be undergoing structural modifications to facilitate Priscilla to play there.

Fashion where is Dancap going to put these shows if he gets them. And if he puts them Downtown Elgin and Wintergarden. Can he compete against Mirvish?

re: Mirvish 2009 / 2010

A friend of mine who is connected to the POPPINS tour says that as of now TO isn't on the list for next season. Maybe the season after? Could be wrong but that's what I've been told.

re: Mirvish 2009 / 2010

I would love to see Xanadu on either line-ups. As I recall, Dancap did not make an announcement until April, so I think we have awhile to go yet!

re: Mirvish 2009 / 2010

Dancap would have to put stuff in the Elgin and Winter Garden. It think everything would be fine in the Elgin, but Xanadu in the WG. I mean, in NY it was at the Helen Hayes Theatre, which is smaller. It should play in a smaller house.

re: Mirvish 2009 / 2010

I definitely have my doubts about Mary Poppins. Hopefully they'll find some sort of other big budget musical cheese fest, because they'll need to entice the subscribers (and there will be many) that are not impressed by Priscilla.

As for Dancap, they caught Mirvish off guard with their inaugural season, and Mirvish hit them hard in retaliation (the current season is a joke). Dancap would certainly build up their subscriber base with shows like In the Heights, Legally Blond, Xanadu and Grease (although I personally have no interest in any of those shows, I know a lot of people will).

RAT vs Canon: I guess in retrospect the spaces are similar, the RA is taller and deeper, while the Canon is wider and with slightly more wing space. Certainly the Canon can hold more people, but that doesn't mean the seats will be filled (in fact for many shows they curtain off the rear balcony entirely.

As for structural modifications, the questions of scheduling relies heavily on whether or not two months (assuming the rumored august closing for dirty dancing and a november opening for priscilla)is enough to:
-remove Dirty Dancing's extensive lifts and revolves
-restore the stage (fill in the gaping hole in the middle and replace the large chunk that was cut out of the front and the mouldings)
-install Priscilla's revolve and any other necessary machinery
-load in the show
-onstage rehearsal and tech rehearsal

It certainly could be if one was ambitious enough, but will Dirty Dancing really be profitable to August? Or is someone trying to force it to run that long by withholding Broadway rights? *cough*

(that last bit is 100% conjecture by the way)

re: Mirvish 2009 / 2010

jmorrison, all I have to say to you is, "you are very smart, and where the hell have you been?"
#63

re: Mirvish 2009 / 2010

When I wrote structural modifications I wasn't talking about the set. Right now Dirty Dancing has their show deck in, it really isn't that complicated to remove. I meant that actual theatre modifications must be done to accommodate for Priscilla. I believe it is a load bearing wall (somewhere backstage) that needs to be moved.
#64

re: Mirvish 2009 / 2010

Tag: Wow I hadn't heard that. I can't think of what wall that would be. Unless it's a load bearing support under the stage, is there a lot of sub stage machinery in the show? Or perhaps the will take out part of the wall between the loading dock and the stage left wings? If the bus leaves the stage, that's probably the only place to put it :)

I'll try to find out more.

PS: Is that your headshot tag? Cause I know I've seen that face I just can't place it.

Fashionguru: I'm not smart, just observant.

re: Mirvish 2009 / 2010

So if Mary Poppins off the list here is the update of possible shows.

1. Pricilla Queen of the Desert: (RAT) Nov. 09

2. Fiddler on the Roof, Winter 09

3. Stuff Happens, (Panasonic)

4. Xanadu

5. Legally Blonde.

6. 39 Steps

Bonus shows: Wicked, June 2010 and August Osage County. Sounds like a good Season, What do the Crew here think?

re: Mirvish 2009 / 2010

If that's the season, I would personally be pleased. I would have preferred Poppins to Legally Blonde, as I have already seen both, but I would like to see Topol ( I saw the Harvey Fierstein production), and missed out on Xanadu in NYC....I would also definately go for the bonus show of AOC

re: Mirvish 2009 / 2010

Ive already seen Xanadu, Legally Blonde and 39 Steps but they are all enjoyable shows that I don't mind seeing again. I never got around to seeing Mary Poppins in NY so I wouldn't have minded seeing that.

I enjoyed AOC but it's not something I need to see again so if it's an extra, I would only see it depending on the cast we have by then.

I'm not so excited by Fidler but maybe Topol will make it better. Sorry but it's def. not a fave of mine.

I'm very excited by PQOTD though and pretty much the sole reason I'll be renewing (unless they stick Grease in that mix, that might actually turn me off).

re: Mirvish 2009 / 2010

NOT REALLY A DRAG

The announcement of the Olivier Awards on Tuesday brought happy news for David Mirvish. He's one of the producers of the hit West End musical about a transvestite nightclub, La Cage Aux Folles, which received seven nominations, more than any other show.

Does this mean we can look forward to La Cage as one of the subscription shows in the 2009-2010 Mirvish season?

Possibly, but don't forget, Priscilla Queen of the Desert is already on the playbill and the waxing tab alone for two cross-dressing musicals in one season might be enough to give even someone as munificent as Mirvish a moment's pause.

Wallybag notes: with 2 drag queens shows might be put in because Dancap was the official sponser of the Gay parade. This might be a way of Mirvish getting back for not having a float in the Gay parade.

7 Subscription Shows that would be nice.

re: Mirvish 2009 / 2010

I don't think La Cage would come. I mean, there really hasn't been any talks about it transferring. Although, David Mirvish is listed on my OLC 'Into the Woods' Recording, and it wasn't brought over. And I don't think anything that was at the Old Vic was transferred to T.O.

La Cage is an awesome show. But if it does come maybe 2010-2011?
They would want Priscilla do well over La Cage I think
