re: Mirvish 2009 / 2010

2010 Mirvish show Priscilla a hit in London.

Ouzounian in the Star:
It looks like Toronto is going to have another hit on its hands.

Priscilla Queen of the Desert, the musical version of the cult 1994 film about three drag queens in the Australian outback, has already been announced as part of the 2009-10 Mirvish subscription season and it opened on Monday night to generally enthusiastic reviews from the British critics.

Nicholas de Jongh, writing in the Evening Standard, proudly announced that, "I welcome it with open arms and a glad rag-bag of positive adjectives. London has never played host to a musical pitched on a higher level of gayness and camp comedy, transsexual barrier-breaking and bitchy, witty drag-queenery, than this ingenious adaptation of the sensational film of the same name."

Love never dies, The boys in the photograph, Legally Blonde, Onsage Country. How come these shows are not included in the Subscription package. You get 7 shows for one low price? and they omit all the good ones. Can someone explain this.

re: Mirvish 2009 / 2010

LEGALLY BLONDE and BOYS IN THE PHOTOGRAPH have not been officially announced yet. BOYS may never actually play Toronto and the same with LOVE NEVER DIES, which has also not been officially announced.

AUGUST was but is only here for a 2-week run at the Canon and they would not be able to accommodate all subscribers for that short a run. So they offer it as an add-on, for those who wish to see it.

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

re: Mirvish 2009 / 2010

LOVE NEVER DIES has been announced: by Andrew Lloyd Webber, and the Really Useful Group. Mirvish hasn't announced it yet, true. But ALW's been talking about the Toronto run for some time.

re: Mirvish 2009 / 2010

LITTLE HOUSE was announced by Mirvish. It's in their subscription.

re: Mirvish 2009 / 2010

Fashionguru was commenting on the announcement of The Canon. Which has not been released by Mirvish. (but assumed)

re: Mirvish 2009 / 2010

Okay here's the lowdown.

August: Osage County is not in the regular subscription lineup due to the frequent use of the c-word, which a large majority of Toronto's stuffy subscriber's would see as being across the line. I'm not sure how Spring Awaking was judged to be acceptable, but that's the official explanation, and having met a lot of older subscribers, I would actually tend to agree.

Legally Blond, if it is indeed coming seems to be a short run that could not accomodate 40,000 subscribers.

Boys in the Photograph will likely not make Toronto during this season, but perhaps in future years...

Now the big question: Love Never Dies. Everyone and their mother has officially announced it, except for Mirvish. There are seemingly three scenarios:

1) Love Never Dies at the RAT in November, for an open ended sit down run. Joseph cancelled outright, replaced with LND in the subscription lineup. I figure most subscribers would happily accept this.
2) Love Never Dies at the RAT in November, to move to New York in Spring 2010, Joseph possibly takes over. This seems unlikely to me because - as much as costs could be saved by moving one production - it still seems to me that Phantom could have a longer run than Joseph, even if it sucks as much as the original.
3) Joseph in Fall 2009 at the RAT, Love Never Dies cancelled outright. Definitely a highly unlikely possibility.

Word is that the final decisions on the season lineup, dates and venues will be made available for Mirvish staffers tomorrow (the 8th of May) so that marketing can finally start the major promotions (which have been suspiciously absent in the turmoil of uncertainty that has been the last couple months).

re: Mirvish 2009 / 2010

The "Programme" advertising kit is now available and gives the publishing schedule (which is bound to change somewhat if it hasn't already).

This is what it says:

Royal Alex:
JJA: The Harder They Come (this is what it says on the show's web site, but elsewhere on the Mirvish site it says it's going into the Canon).
SON/DJF/MAM: Joseph (Really Useful says Love Never Dies will go there).

Princess of Wales:
JJA/SON/DJF: Sound of Music
MAM: Priscilla

Canon:
JJA: Riverdance
SON: August: Osage County
DJF: Fiddler on the Roof / Little House on the Prairie
MAM: Young Frankenstein

Panasonic:
JJA: WWRY
SON: Stuff Happens
DJF: Cloud 9
MAM: TBA

re: Mirvish 2009 / 2010

Mirvish Productions has finally put out their big season posters and booklets, although there is still no information about exact dates and venues.

Boys in the Photograph now starts Sept 22 for a six week run. The fact that it is bumped up a month may mean nothing, or it may mean there is another show going in within a couple months of BITP. I wondered if Mirvish would employ the same revolve with square centre elevator and "goalpost" elevator as seen in youtube videos of the hungary and korea versions. I've heard that a modular stage deck is going in at the RAT that will allow for such understage mechanics easily for any show that comes... So it's possible. Seems a bit like Dirty Dancing's double drum revolve though.

Harder they Come is almost ready to go in at the Canon.

The rest will likely go to the Canon as well, save Priscilla which is still presumed to a be a Princess show (apparently the only theatre with enough space, and the two at the Panasonic (Cloud 9, Stuff Happens)

re: Mirvish 2009 / 2010

Yes the Royal Alex has undergone some structural renovations to the stage over the past few months.

I've also heard lately that Priscilla might not be happening. Don't know the reason why. (Perhaps to be replaced with P2?)

re: Mirvish 2009 / 2010

UGH! First we say goodbye to Joseph... and now possibly Priscilla as well? While I am okay with Joseph being bumped to a future season, I personally believe bumping Priscilla for Phantom 2 would be a horrible idea.

PS. If the Royal Alex is going to be empty, is it possible that the Rent talks might be close to a deal? Hm...?

re: Mirvish 2009 / 2010

RENT already had a lengthy run there, plus tours have stopped by 3 times. The last two it did not sell all that well. I think the local audience for RENT has been exhausted.

re: Mirvish 2009 / 2010

The RAT is actually still undergoing those renos to the stage. I hear that nearly the entire centre stage area visible through the prosc is now going to be made up of a grid of removable square deck pieces. It seems like that should have been done years ago...

"Rent" might rent (no pun intended, but it's funny anyhow) one of the Mirvish theatres, but I doubt Mirvish would go out of their way to bring it to the city.

I think Priscilla is now fairly set in stone. Sound of Music is running below 75% from what I hear, so I don't see it lasting much further than Christmas, if that. That said, I just don't see Priscilla being a huge sell, sorry. I think if Sound of Music isn't doing well, then something like Priscilla with limited appeal will sell extremely well initially then fizzle out very quickly. Without the audience from the states to push through the summer and slow fall it'll be difficult. I hope I'm wrong, for the sake of Toronto theatre!

re: Mirvish 2009 / 2010

Sound of Music hasn't sold the upper balcony since around April. That means that a little over 20% of the house capacity isn't sold per performance. The show has a substantial running cost (50+ cast, 15+ orchestra, 50+ crew, etc.). But having said that, the cast was recently signed though early 2010.

re: Mirvish 2009 / 2010

Priscilla could catch on like another MAMMA MIA... campy, familiar music, over the top fun.

As for RENT, it might not have done well the last few times (one of which, I was working on the tour, actually), but this time they've got Adam and Anthony, who are selling lots of tickets in other cities where RENT's played to death. Personally, I disliked both of them when I saw the tour a few months ago, but their names should help sell tickets more than the previous tours.
#147

re: Mirvish 2009 / 2010

I agree with tourboi. You can't compare ticket sales/demand between previous non-Equity tours and the current tour with Rapp and Pascal. This tour has been selling extremely well in very large venues all over the U.S. I don't, for a minute, believe that the local audience has been exhausted, any more than the audience in U.S. cities has. This tour is something different that will attract all kinds of people, both old fans and new.

The cast was told a few months ago that they would be in Toronto for the week of U.S. Thanksgiving. Whether or not that has been finalized, I don't know, but it was added to their itinerary sometime in April.

If they do end up making it to Toronto, I just hope, for the fans there, that Anthony will take at least one damn night off!

re: Mirvish 2009 / 2010

Let me make one thing clear, hehe....

I was not basing ticket sales based on Equity or Non Equity. Frankly, I've seen the current tour (and previous ones). Like I said, I've worked one of the non Eq tours of RENT, and I've also worked on the Broadway production, and I can say with honesty that the Non Eq I worked out had possibly the best cast I've seen do it.

The reason that subsequent tours of RENT in TO haven't sold is (in my opinion) not because of quality, but because the show's just exhausted the audience there. What I was arguing was that the chance to see Anthony and Adam will renew interest and help it sell better.

re: Mirvish 2009 / 2010

Is anybody going to The Harder They Come? I'm going to the first performance tomorrow night.

===========

Saw The Harder They Come last night. Good show. Very good music, singers and band. Nice lighting design. Plot is fairly thin and it's overly long. The Jamaican accents and patois may make it difficult for some to understand every word, although the story itself is clear. Perfect timing for the show, what with it being Caribana season. They are even selling beef patties in the lobby ($2). Encore ending a bit Mamma Mia-ish (audience stands, claps and sings along).
