Growl, nobody brought me Chinese food. I even asked the dog if he would walk himself so I could rest but he said no.

Ken Jeong would be brilliant as The Engineer. The only thing would be that they MAY have to downplay the racial duality of the character. As a clear Eurasian (as interpreted by Mackintosh and Pryce), Tran is not white enough to fit into the rich American dream he cooks up, nor is he entirely Asian enough to feel he can integrate himself into the pan-Asian sex industry world he finds himself in.

Although I am not 100% sure of it myself, what about Johnny Depp as the Engineer?

Just spitballin' here...
Director: Ang Lee
The Engineer: Jackie Chan
Kim: Utada Hikaru
Chris: Jonathan Rhys Meyers
Thuy: Jason Scott Lee
John: Taye Diggs
Ellen: Toni Collette
Gigi: Coco Lee
It's not so much that the people involved have the required musical talent. Just that they're the faces I picture in my head.
* * *
(Un)fortunately, if Wikipedia is to be believed, Lee Daniels is looking to direct, Paula Wagner and Cam Mac will co-produce, an unknown will be Kim, and they'll shoot on location in Cambodia and Ho Chi Minh City.

Please, you KNOW Jessica Sanchez grew up singing every Disney princess song ever written.

Alan Cumming as Engineer... I am literally begging.
Speaking of Jake, wasn't he supposed to be in that Damn Yankees remake with Jim Carrey?

I've only heard Jake sing once. It was Saturday Night Live and he sang "And I Am Telling You". It wasn't a pretty sound, but the boy was PERFECTLY in pitch the entire song.

I want an actual Vietnamese woman cast as Kim. Come on, there are so many Vietnamese actresses trying to catch a break out there.
Chris Evans for Chris! I don't care if he can sing, haha.

He did a pretty good job singing Three Times a Lady in What's Your Number?

I wonder how young they would want to cast Chris and Ellen. I could actually see Darren Criss and Anna Kendrick.

"Alan Cumming as Engineer.."
Now that's a brilliant idea. He is a great actor and singer and the right type.
Darren Criss' singing is not good enough for Chris unfortunately.
I think people don't realize how vocally demanding the roles of Chris, Kim and Ellen are.
In my opinion Amy Adams is the perfect type for Ellen, but unfortunately also not a strong enough singer for this material.

I know he's not a big enough name (compared to the stars of the Les Mis movie) but how about Hunter Parrish as Chris? A younger Chris Evans would have been great in the role. Love Anna Kendrick as Ellen.

Is not Asian at all the right type for the Engineer?

Rhys Meyers is too old IMHO, I think it's important to cast young (would Meyers even be drafted at his age?)
The Paperboy seems to largely be getting mixed to negative reviews, Kidman aside. I wonder if its reception would play a part in Lee Daniels making Miss Saigon. Still, Adam Shankman keeps getting work, so...

Chris Evans is older than Chris would be, but he's often cast younger in movies. Heck, he just played a soldier in Captain America not long ago.
Anna Kendrick would be great for Ellen.
I think you would need an Asian actor playing the Engineer. Hollywood whitewashing is bad enough nowadays as it is. I actually agree that Ken Jeong is a good idea for the Engineer doesn't need to really sing that well. The Engineer does need to be funny and charismatic while oozing sleaze at the same time, and I think that Ken Jeong could pull it off.

Jeong in Act 1 would be good. Jeong in Act 2 would be even better- when we see the Engineer completely deflated and out of his element. Oozing desperation and completely out of luck is what Jeong does best, especially if you watch him on Community.

Too muscular. Would he really be physically threatened by Chris?
"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter

Rob Schneider as The Engineer :) although they'll likely go for someone the level of Ken Watanabe.

Watanabe isn't such a bad idea, actually.
I think Amanda Seyfried has a shot at Ellen-she seems to be the go-to girl for those type of roles.
How about Matthew Morrison as Chris??? (He looks young enough still.)
