To be nominated for a Tony you must actually appear in the show, critics can't nominate them because their names were in the playbill. In actuality I felt quite bad for Michael, though I wish I could have seen him.
when I saw this I left the theatre underwhelmed. I liked it enough, but left cold. I did not know the score or story going in. however, something stuck with me. over the past couple of weeks I have been listening to the OLCR, and love it more and more with every listen. now it has become one of my "go to" cds, and I can't get enough of it.
I do hope it will get a nomination for at least all the technical aspects, score, and Maria Friedman. I hope I am not asking too much.
I think Pippin's reaction is common for WIW. Many don't initially like it, but the score and the story grows on you. When I saw it for a second time, in London, I knew what to expect and was obviously very happy.
Only wish they didn't cut out "If not for me, for her"!

I think a lot of us feel bad for Michael Ball. When the show first started we all talked about how he would at least be nominated in the featured catregory. Fosco is a terrific role both for the acting & characterization and the singing. But now I guess both Michael's can lament about the fat suit. Too bad really.
I heard that Mike Ball left because the show wasn't doing as good as it was expected. Any truth to this?
Not at all. He had gotten really sick from a mixture of things and couldn't perform. He did come back a few times close to the end of the run, but there was obvious strain in his voice. Luckily he is better now and home in England!

I've seen this comment before. For many people, their love for the music came on them gradually, and now its one of their all-time favorites.
I think when I first saw it on broadway, my reaction was mixed, but by my second viewing I was already in love. It is a genious work of ALW, that needs time to be appreciated!
P.S. Does anyone know where I can order tix for Maria at the carlyle? I was on ticketmania, but I couldnt find where I could order the tickets.

Michael Ball was only to be in until early March anyway. But he got sick a couple of days after Christmas and was out for several weeks. Tried to come back and did five shows and lost his voice. Could not sing for two months. Only just started again.
yes...i had mixed feelings when i saw it for the 1st time, then when i saw the final performance...it was amazing...i was also familiar with the score...and the theatre was 100% full..so...unfortunatly it was more exciting...and the show was not selling that well. Google the Carlyle cafe...it has a website where you can purchase tix...i will be there on thursday the 4th if everything works out.

Question about Glyde's death.
*possible spoiler!*
At the end, does he jump in front of the train on accident, or did he do it so that he wouldn't be caught and prosecuted for his crimes? I can't tell just by listening. He says "The game is never over!" which sounds like he either tried to escape, or that he just preferred to kill himself instead of being arrested.

He runs into the train tunnel to escape Walter and the train hits him. Loved that effect in the theatre.
I got shivers both on Broadway and in London at that part!
Great effect and great finale!
Of course I think Lloyd Weber's initial idea of them carving Anne Catherick into Laura's gravestone was brilliant for the very end!
Muscle, maybe Ill see you there the 4th then! :-p

I'll be in NYC on Wednesday for the first time since the show closed and I'm quite sure I'll have a lump in my throat passing the Marquis.
I do believe that this is a show that took "investment" on the part of the audience. I didn't love it the first time I saw it in London, but I was blown away by the individual performances, particularly Maria, Michael (Ball) and Jill Paice. The character of Anne I actually found a bit annoying. It wasn't until I saw the re-worked Broadway show that I truly appreciated Angela Christian's amazing vocals and her tortured portrayal of Anne. They should have stuck to the London ending...far more poignant...but this was a beautiful show...it deserved better than it got.
I'm optimistic that Maria will pull off a Tony nomination, and I think she will still be a lead contender in the category. I'd love for Michael to at least get a nod...I wouldn't expect him to win given his abbreviated run...but if you saw his performance as Fosco it was brilliant and well worthy of a nomination.
