Regional theatres are struggling across the U.S. There are less audience members post quarantine. Which means less performances and higher ticket prices. I’ve seen several critics complain that theaters “aren’t doing shows that people want to see.”
In the 1990’s there were a handful of shows that were dubbed “safe crowd pleasers” to program between the artists passion projects. Things like:
Neil Simon comedies
Shakespeare comedies
Golden age musicals (Sound of Music, Guys and Dolls, etc.)
Comedy chestnuts like Arsenic and Old Lace
A Christmas Carol
The new generation finds these dated. NY Theater loves jukebox musicals and shows based on films. But these aren’t sure fire money makers.
