‘Cats’ Closing: Is It Curtains for Broadway Musicals?

Jul 22, 2026 — 1:08:33 PM

Omg these articles are inusfferable.Broadway musicals have survived economic crashes, pandemics, 9/11, depressions, wars, Time Square becoming a hell hole, demolitions of theaters and much more. They will survive Cats the Jellicle Ball closing. Not that things shouldn't be looked at or changed. But these fatalistic articles and headlines are so so stupid

Ouch for Every Brilliant ThingDeath of a Salesman is such a monster. I wonder how high it can go for its final weeks?Still waiting for Moulin Rouge to start ascending in grosses towards its closing. I'm a bit surprised it hasn't started doing that yetSo solid for Oh Mary especially with Stalter out.I expect a Two Strangers closing notice very soon.

Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 7/13/26

Could it be possible that there are plenty of tourists who are bilingual AND the old spectacle warhorses like Cats (OG), Phantom, Lion King, Wicked, etc appeal to international tourists because they are a spectacle that can be enjoyed even if you don't speak the language?

Solid bounce back week for & Juliet, Just in Time, Gatsby, Schmigadoon and The Outsiders.Great week for The Lost Boys.Buena Vista is losing steam quickly. Two Strangers also seems destined to be done by Labor Day but probably even before if I had to guess.I mentioned this last week but Joe Turner's has quietly had a really great run.Tracee Ellis Ross does not move tickets like Radcliffe or Hargitay, no surprise.Solid first week for the Stalter administration at Oh Mary.

Rumor: CATS: THE JELLICLE BALL to close in August?

Jul 13, 2026 — 1:57:35 PM

The fake "extensions" are all semantics and marketing tricks but there seems to be something to it because shows like Mincemeat and Oh Mary have made it work really well for them.

Wicked's Dropping Grosses

Like others have said, I’m sure it can have a nice run for a bit longer coasting in the mid-range of grosses."Well, The Lion King is still doing blockbuster business at almost 30 years. I do think it's tied to the movie but not just because of the way things went for the second movie but also a course correction for how popular it was leading up to and after the first movie.

Rumor: CATS: THE JELLICLE BALL to close in August?

Promoting guest judges was never going to do the trick on its own."...

Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 7/6/26

Yes I mentioned Wicked's numbers being lower and it is noticeable but anyone who thinks that show is going anywhere anytime soon is completely wrong. It is nowhere similar to what was happening with Phantom for YEARS before it announced a closing. Ditto for Cats and Les Mis.All that being said, it would be nice if someone could light a fire under that production because when I saw it not too long ago, it certainly had a "going through the motions" feel

A brutal week for & Juliet and Gatsby. Time for those two to pack it in.I know it's not in trouble but Wicked is looking soooo weak lately. Many of the other old standbys held up better with the holiday week.If this was a "down" week for The Lost Boys this summer, that's a good sign Even though it was down, Joe Turner's Come and Gone has really had a nice run even without major Tony noms/wins

Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 6/29/26

Jun 30, 2026 — 4:19:04 PM

I'm a bit surprised Moulin Rouge hasn't picked up more as it heads towards its end of summer closing. I'm sure it will once August rolls around. Regarding the Schmigadoon bump, I think it's pretty solid. Not an Outsiders level bump but it's doing way better than it was before its win and hanging in strong territory.

NYT: What Happened to Broadway’s New Musicals? This Year, They Vanished.

Jun 24, 2026 — 12:22:17 PM

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The outlier was 14-15 new musicals a year. That was unsustainable and never going to continue. Yes, 6 was low last season but 7-10, which this season will probably end up being, is the norm for most of the years since the mid 90s swoon.
