Having nixed Hello Dolly! I sent a few music clips of Waitress to my mom and got this email back:

-----------------------

I don't  think I will enjoy a show like this one. I like the old fashion and drama stylemshow, such as the carousel. West side story, my fairly etc

It is hard for me to swallow a new style show. I am so looking foward to watching  the carousel. It was so dramatic and sad but the music was so emotional. It was.sad.story.but you don't  feel it was too sad.to.enjoy the show.

----------------------

LOL so I guess Carousel it is next March.

Poisonivy2, so Anastasia was never an option? I guess it has a bit of a classic feel (?). Anyway, Carousel sounds great and I hope you both have a great time :)

Anastasia is my thing. I heavily dislike stories based on the Romanov family and the imposter Anna Anderson and I don't think I could enjoy the show at all. My mom also doesn't like the story of Anna Anderson either.

poisonivy2 Did you think about Bella? As I said, I think it could go either way on whether she enjoys it but I think it's worth a shot and you'll be able to get great seats for less than you'd pay for Broadway.

Am happy to report ... the next Momsical will be Hello Dolly! with Donna Murphy!!! So excited. I told her there was dancing in it and she was sold.

That sounds fantastic! So happy for you both! I totally agree on Anastasia, not too familiar with the show but a huge Romanov buff. In fact, DNA evidence from the last couple years proved that no one survived the family's execution, making Anastasia historically impossible.

I thought Anastasia would be a good momsical for my mother, who's always had an interest in the Romanov dynasty, but she feels the same way you do Ivy.

Yes, Dolly is a great dancing show. Honestly, for all the talk about Bette and Donna, I feel the ensemble is the star of the show.

And the costumes... And the set! Loved the set!

It's one of those shows that works successfully as a feast for the eyes even if you can't understand the jokes. And the music can still be quite pleasant listening if you can't understand the songs themselves. Plus the underlying story is really simple to follow. I tend to explain what I know about the plot and characters before the show and then clarify some things during intermission.

I think Horace's accent can be pretty difficult to understand though.

Since we are seeing it tomorrow I gave my mom a run-down of the plot. She was like "So Dolly wants to marry the rich guys so she pushes the other woman aside?" I was like yes, but it's ok, because the other woman falls in love with the rich guy's clerk. LOL. I'm excited.

An update since this is Mother's Day: I've taken my mom to Carousel which she absolutely loved. I want to push My Fair Lady but she's resisting because she says she thinks it won't be as good as the movie.

Do you think she'll enjoy Frozen? Just thinking of other momsicals since she seems so dead-set against MFL.

I hate the movie and think it is nothing compared with the magical experience I had at Vivian Beaumont.

Ok it's momsical advice time again. My mom wants to see MFL Thanksgiving weekend. I see that Laura Benati is not performing on Nov 23 which is actually the best date for me and my mom. My mom is also somewhat old-fashioned and prefers traditional soprano voices to sing Eliza. If there's anyone who has seen both ladies could you tell me how well Kerstin Anderson stacks up against Laura Benanti? Remember this is for my mom, not me.

I’d argue that Laura’s more of a classic soprano than Kerstin. Kerstin’s a soprano, but she has a more contemporary sound (she sings the score very well) and isn’t as classical as Laura can be. On the other hand though, Kerstin is less of a comical scene-chewer than Laura and more of a traditional Eliza. So it’s really your pick, but I’m inclined to say see Kerstin.

Hmm. My mom also is old fashioned in that she thinks Eliza should be demure and sweet. Is Anderson more demure and sweet than Benanti?

(By the way, don't get the wrong picture of my mom -- she's just an older-aged Asian lady. Politically she's very liberal.)

Laura is performing at the matinee on 11/23, just not the evening.

I can’t answer for Kerstin, but from what I’ve heard Laura’s Eliza is fairly sassy.
