I've seen a lot of negative reviews. Refer to the recent Hamilton thread on the Broadway cast to see SchuylWERKsister's opinion. I genuinely love Montego, but if she's getting panned almost universally, she's not doing something right.

It is not a good performance. It is truly a disservice to all the women who have stood by and understudied the role, and clear that her resume helped her immensely or she did something in the room that she is not doing onstage. Her voice is not a good fit for the role, her acting is very musical threatre and presentational. There is nothing cool about her Angelica, and I didn't believe that all the guys wanted her, or feel any connection/sense of regret/passion between her and Hamilton for a single moment of the show. She was cracking, not singing notes to their full value, head voicing parts that go against the dynamics written into the score. This was my first time seeing her work so I can assure you that I didn't go in with any expectations or wanting to dislike her. It was a painfully amateur performance that would have fallen flat even if it was the first performance of an understudy.

^So I've heard from someone I work with who saw Montego Glover as Fantine. Reading these comments about her, I'm so happy I sold my ticket for last Friday's performance. I wasn't able to take my trip to Chicago as planned, and thought I'd have to eat the cost of the ticket.

Yikes, I'm taking my dad to see the show in January and now I'm worried... Sucks to go from Karen Olivo to this. Granted, the original Chicago cast was excellent and would be hard to top, but if a performer is getting straight up panned you know you screwed up the casting. Even other replacements I've hated (Lexi, Seth Stewart) had some supporters.
Crossing my fingers for an understudy I guess!

Montego Glover is a one trick pony. Post Memphis, she's been horrendous in everything she's done. She does gig after gig with symphonies and orchestras, but for why? Her voice is not thrilling. I don't get it

She was also awful in Memphis (despite her Tony nomination). I'm continually surprised that she keeps landing major roles.

Not to pile on, but I felt the same way when I saw Memphis. Her acting was wooden and there was nothing special about her voice, which didn't aid the story at all. I mean, THIS was the voice that was bringing those two worlds together? I didn't get it.

I've seen her in a number of shows -- MEMPHIS, LES MIZ, and as a standby for Nettie in the original COLOR PURPLE -- and I've never gotten her appeal. Very mediocre voice and no acting talent to speak of. But she's known in the industry as a hard worker and a genial colleague, and that can take you far sometimes.

She was horrendous in Memphis, but the entire thing was even worse. Even in a Hamilton fan group I am in on facebook, all the hardcore fans who obsess over literally every cast member from every production all speak negatively about her performance, and I'm pretty sure the majority of these people know absolutely nothing about musical theatre outside of Hamilton.

I saw Karen Olivo in the part twice in Chicago and then saw Montego Glover two weeks ago, in Chicago, as well. If I had to compare them, I liked Olivo more in the part, but did not find Glover to be horrible or distracting. The major difference, in my opinion, was what someone mentioned previously about her presence. She did not seem to command attention in a group setting, which seems to be part of Angelica, but at the same time, her performance is not anything that would ruin the experience.

Has anybody seen both Glover and Mandy Gonzalez as Angelica and can compare? I can't imagine the former being that much worse than the latter, who is just so very wrong for the part.

She was incredible in Memphis (Tony nom) and I enjoyed her Fantine. She is incredibly talented, perhaps she just is not your taste for Angelica.

So I’m at the show currently and it’s intermission. I will say Montego is not as good as Karen, but she’s doing a lot better than I expected. I’m just annoyed by how throaty her voice is. It almost sounds like there’s a frog stuck in there, but it’s not as bad as Ari’s nasally Voice.
