More upsetting taboo news...

as reported from Imdb.com:

American comedienne Rosie O'Donnell could lose an incredible $20 million after promising to keep flop show Taboo on the Broadway stage until January. The League Of Their Own star has personally invested a huge $10 million in developing and staging the Boy George-penned musical, which is loosely based on the singer's life in early-eighties London. And Rosie - who insists the show should carry on despite dismal reviews and poor ticket sales - could double her loss. A source tells the Pagesix website, "On opening night and after the awful weekend, Rosie still says she will single-handedly keep the show open until January. She thinks people just need to warm up to the show, but on Saturday night only 250 seats out of 1,050 were filled. No one wants to see the show. It is awful. She bastardized the British version, which was successful. The talk on Broadway is that she is going to lose her shirt. The show costs over $500,000 a week to run. Last week - its opening week - it only took in $320,872.49 for seven performances. So Rosie has to pay the rest of the costs out of pocket. There is nothing that will lift this production off the ground. Nothing. It's not even farce-bad. This is just tedious. On a good note, Rosie is very committed to the show and cast." A representative for Taboo says, "We've played 21 performances to date and have received 21 standing ovations. There is every reason to believe that Taboo, like most new musicals, will find its audience."

There's that Standing Ovation comment again. LOL Maybe somebody should let Rosie know that people stand because they think they're supposed to, and not because they want to.

I haven't seen the show yet, but I've heard some good things about it. I think it might have done better if it had opened in the Spring and in a smaller venue.

memo to Rosie: A musical can't find its audience without people attending the show. Start papering the house and offering special deals to attract people to the theater! You have to get people talking about the show.
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

Rosie, time to change the entire ad campaign, which was wrongheaded to begin with, the "posters" are horrible, that air-brushed shot of an 98' Boy George is a puzzle, I'm thinking something like the old "Cast Cats" billboard where you had them coming at you, show us the energy, and Raul front and center, when his Cabaret poster went up biz leapt 12%, that's a good thing. Stop with the "Yellow" stuff, it's stopped working for Oprah, it never worked for you. Get a decent P.R. group to undo the damage of the last month, STOP acting like it's the hit of Broadway, admit you were in over your head, make jokes about it, be honest with your fans, that's what they adore about you! If possible tinker here and there, focus your considerable energies on more Madonna like photo ops, make a cameo, keep it in the news in a good way, make nicey with The Post, give em' an exclusive, take over page 2, let's do it...PM, I'm here to help. The Sheek will turn things around, and oh yeah, give the Broadwayworld.com an entire section, take us to Angus after, get drunk with us, let's really see if we can use our "power" for good!

Taboo has never played to a house that is more than 50% full. "The woman knows what she is doing" in regards to what? Losing money?

Goth it's yet another case of people telling us, we who work and live in NYC and in the theater business that we don't know what's going on...it's like DOTV all over again, the ONLY thing that matters is the B.O. grosses, that's it, end of story, I posted some ideas I KNOW will help, but Horsey ever the empty-headed hysteric went into attack mode, but believe me I'm more than ready, with the facts.

Okay, Horsey, I have watched your ridiculous exchanges w/ the other people on this board & have kept my thoughts to myself becasus I was making allowances for irrational exuberance. Now, however, you're just being inexcusably absurd, unbelievably childish. If all you want is to rah-rah Rosie then go somewhere where the board is about that sort of thing. Here it is about an exchange of opinions, hopefully intelligent & reasonably well-informed opinions. Telling people to "just shut up" because Rosie "knows what she is doing" is not an open exchange of opinions, is not intelligent, and is not reasonably well-informed. So, grow up, act responsibly, express yourself appropriately, or go away. And, no more threats to go away & then ricochet back. Just do it.

I agree with Sheek. What she's doing is obviously not working. When one way doesn't work try another. It is ridiculous to continue on this path of self destruction. It's a shame though because i've heard some great things about the show. The critical concensus is that it is trash which i'm not completely convinced is the case. I wish that Rosie would get the actors out on more talk shows and get more people aware of the show. Perhaps i'm mistaken but I haven't seen them doing much publicity in recent times. They are a new show and they're being riduculed for various reasons. If she believes in the show so much then she needs to get the actors out and about to prove the critics wrong.

wow, i think there's lotsa good ideas there that should be looked at to increase the visibility of the show and turn the word of mouth. i think the other thing that they could do for cheap is to plaster the city with flyers. you shouldn't be able to go five feet in this town without seeing the word taboo and a cast member's smiling (or hideously made-up) face.

the thing i find funny about the article that started this thread though was that the weekly on this show seems to go up every time it's mentioned in the press. i don't know, folks, at the rate that it's expanding we might not be able to save it because it'll easily be at $8-$9 million a week by christmas. by the tony's there'll have to be a congressional bail out of taboo just to keep the show up with costs in the billions. cancel medicare, mama, we gots to keep them freaks in pantyhose!

When a show is in trouble and you believe in it you do whatever you can, look at The Producers, the creative team finally admitted they were in trouble, the grosses fall was too muc hto ignore, so, they put their money where their mouth was, faced the fact the the show ain't the "star" and got Nathan and Matthew back. What I described in my earlier post is simple text book "show fixin'"...but, perhaps the team over at TABOO has something else up their colorful sleeves?

After re-reading some of Horsey's posts I'm now sure it's the lovely and talented Ms. Penny Marshall! She was out of control on opening night, it was like Mom after one too many merlots.

Thanks ErikJ972 re: more upsetting taboo news...
I just got Cyndi's cd yesterday and I absolutely love it. She took songs that have been recorded by many different artists and somehow made them completely new and wonderful.

Theaterbaby....

I bought it yesterday too...along with Britney's new album. I love Cyndi's version of Unchained Melody...and I never even used to like that song before.

re: re: re: more upsetting taboo news...

Reminds me of George C Scott . Years ago, he had a movie called "The Savage is Loose" . It was a vanity project which the critics trashed. He played the movie for about a year in a theater on the east side . He kept running it even though the theater was empty most of the time. He believed in it & threw his money away keeping it running
