I realize that...it's just my personal opinion and I have what I would consider a fairly extensive knowledge of theatre. I agree with you in the sense that people who've only listened to Wicked and Rent to say they find Defying Gravity to be the MOST moving song ever written, well, that's kind of ridiculous.
Also, I think different things are moving to different people for vast reasons. The way certain singers sing particlar songs also influence for me, how moving a song is. For example, Meadowlark is only moving to me as sung by two women; Liz Callaway and Alice Ripley. I've heard all the other well known versions of the song, and I only really care for those specific versions.
Great thread, by the way. Good to get people thinking. :)
you don't like Susan Egan's "Meadowlark", Jezzebelle? It's my favorite! Her voice is so pure and raw, Sarah Brightman's version is too trilly which doesnt work for the song. I like Callaway's version too-never heard Ripley's. I see what you are saying about singers effecting the song. I love "sucks to be me" "..porn" just because Stephanie D'abruzzo's voice makes me giggle - too cute!
You'll Never Walk Alone from Carousel
Til There Was You from The Music Man
A Little Fall of Rain from Les Mis
Seasons of Love from Rent
I'll Cover You (Reprise) from Rent
Written In The Stars from Aida
Defying Gravity from Wicked
In defense of the modern broadway - most of the older shows with "moving" music - no one on here has seen performed outside of a regional theatre - and therefore it's most definitely not as moving as it should be. Rawr.
Most definately "PART OF US" from ONCE ON THIS ISLAND!
That song totally makes me sob, when I see it performed!

Almost all of Miss Saigon. I haven't yet listened to the end without crying. "How in one night, did we come so far." chills

Oh, I've thought of more...
Who will love me as I am from Sideshow
Also if we were to say moving in a not-quite-so-sad-but-more-uplifting-way I'd have to say Red and Black from Les Miz b/c whenever I see it I always have this urge to run up on the stage and join in. Oh God how I love theatre... LOL.
None have really made me so moved I cry, but definite chill bumps:
1. "Lot's Wife" / "Why Does Our House...? though "Epilogue" - Caroline, or Change
2. "Defying Gravity" - Wicked
3. "Where is Love?" / "As Long As He Needs Me" - Oliver!
4. "And I Am Telling You..." / "It's All Over" - Dreamgirls
5. "Dance of the Robe" / "I Know the Truth" - AIDA
6. "Halloween" / "Contact" / "I'll Cover You (Rep.)" - RENT
7. "Your Daddy's Son" / "Sarah Brown Eyes" - Ragtime
Those are some...
lyfeisacabaret: HAHAHA i love your icon. i grew up watching the movie version of Millie my whole life.

I'm not a fan of the Susan Egan version of Meadowlar, Curtainup, which is odd, because I adore Susan Egan's voice. For some reason, this version just didn't do anything for me.
Alice Ripley performed at my former college a year or two ago and she did the most beautiful version of that song I've ever heard. Absolutely gorgeous and the emotion in her voice as she was singing it, made tears form in my eyes. Incredible.
I love Stephanie's voice as well ! Too adorable. :)
To add to my list that appeared awhile ago:
"A Little Fall of Rain" - Les Mis
this seems to be the song i'm writing on all of my responses, but def. being alive. its incredible. also, all of last five years and rent: i'll cover you (reprise). also, in his eyes is amazing, especially with LINDA EDER AND CAROLEE CARMELLO!!!!!! can u imagine?!!?! its simply astonishing
