I know I quote Sweeney Todd all the time. But it's not the most quotable of all time, by any means.

I'd say Rent is pretty quoatable.

Jesus, I hope you all are kidding.

If there's a more quotable musical than Gypsy, I don't know what it is.

Gypsy is great to quote as well, bu many non-Broadway people don't know what the heck you are talking about-I suppose it's the same for most other shows though

I was actually thinking King and I also because I say "Etc. etc. etc." and "is a puzzlement" almost as part of my daily language. I used "By your pupils you'll be taught" as the introduction to more than one paper in my education classes back in school.

I have to admit to slipping in the odd Rent quote in every day talking also....

I was teaching a class a couple of weeks ago, talking about charity, and without even realizing it I said to the kids, "Just imagine you're homeless, out on the street, you're hungry and frozen" ... one of my kids piped up IMMEDIATELY with "Some life that we've chosen!" I didn't even realize what I'd said - I sub-consciously quote things now! Ugh, this addiction of mine...

Everybody knows Gypsy.

Proof:

1. Every once in a while, Kelly Ripa, out of nowhere, sings "I have a dreaaaaaaaam." Regis answers her with "A wonderful dreeaaaaaaam...."

2. Rose's Turn is the song of choice for Lucielle Bluth's drunken parades on Arrested Development....it was also the song of choice for when Buster trashed the apartment (I believe).

If we're talking NON-Broadway, then "Wizard of Oz" by a mile!

If we're talking Broadway, then I think "The Sound of Music" would win... but mostly because of how wide-spread the film was.

the question was

In your opinion, what is the most quotable musical of all time?

it does not stipulate Broadway, non-Broadway, etc

and anyone saying RENT, rjust isn't thinking. I love RENT, BUT....there are so many more shows which people quote.

I'll say Chicago if only because of "All that Jazz" and how often I find myself using that at the end of a statement.

"Yeah, I have to go clean my apartment and all that jazz."

On more than one occasion when I see someone pulled over by a cop I'll involuntarily say "He had it coming. He only had himself to blame."

I also say things like "Lets give them the old Razzle Dazzle" when referring to impressing someone or throwing a party.

Last week I actually worked, "If Jesus Christ lived in Chicago today, and he had come to me and he had five thousand dollars, let's just say things would have turned out differently." into a religious discussion with my boss. re: Most Quotable Musical

I guess it just depends on how and by who it is being quoted. Gypsy has a lot of famous lines and quotes that are used. There is even a book on musicals entitled "Sing Out, Louise!" 42nd Street has a lot of theatre cliches that get quoted a lot ("..you'll come back a star, musical comedy the two most glorious words in the english language", etc). I guess the younger generation of theatre goers will quote Rent, Wicked..etc. I also agree that Sound of Music is also used a bunch.

"You pile up enough tomorrows, and you'll find you are left with nothing but a lot of empty yesterdays. I don't know about you, but I'd like to make today worth remembering." --Harold Hill from The Music Man
