Many people (mostly the boomer generation) know of Brando more for his movies.
I think Bernadette, Julie Andrews and Matthew Brodedrick (maybe) are the most recognizable

To be completely honest, before I was into theatre, Glenn Close WAS Cruella De Vil. I never knew she had even been on Broadway until I heard "Christmas at Hampton Court," and I still didn't even know about Sunset Boulevard. Maybe I was just retarded, but she's hardly the most recognizable name.

I could tell you no one I know could tell you who Chita Rivera was. Bernadette Peters, Julie Andrews, and Matthew Broderick have GOT to be the most recognizable. Marlon Brando maybe with the older generation.

People who are "aware" of what is going on on Broadway might mention the likes of Chita Rivera, Bernadette Peters but away from New York the general public are more likely to name people that they know of from television and movies that they know of that have done stage work. Hence Glenn Close.

Posted: 12/11/05 at 6:41pmEven though everyone knows Streisand's name, I am not sure that they all think of her as a Broadway star, whereas people like Liza Minelli and Bernadette Peters and Julie Andrews are all known as being musical theatre people.

Glenn Close graduated from William and Mary in Williamsburg VA and was VERY active in the drama department. My dad works on the buildings at the school and in the building that holds the theater there are pictures of all of the past students that have become something and a majority of them have Glenn close in them.
