Greekmusicalfan, I was just going to ask that! Because Richard Rogers, Stephen Sondheim and Andrew Lloyd Webber are also VERY recognizably musical theater. Also, i was surprised Mary Martin wasn't mentioned.

What about Jason Alexander -- EVERYONE knows who he is...
Or Alan Alda?
Or Alec Baldwin?
Or Kevin Spacey?
Or Al Pacino?
Or are we limiting it to people primarily known for Broadway, because certainly all of those above have been associated with it.

Posted: 12/11/05 at 7:18pmNot really, everyone knows Sondheim because every cultured person is supposed to like him. They bring him up when they're feeling pretencious.

Posted: 12/11/05 at 7:19pmbut the majority of uncultured America probably doesn't have a clue who he is because they're more concerned with seeing Phantom or the Sound of Music than Sweeney Todd.

#35re: Most Recognizable Name in Broadway
Posted: 12/11/05 at 7:37pmI was going to mention him, but in thinking about it, I realized that a lot of my non theatre obsessed friends don't know who he is. They all know know Matthew Broderick tho.

Percy: Sink me! If it isn't Javvurt!
Javert: Zsah-vair, it's pronounced Zsah-vair.
Pecry: But it's spelled J-A-V-E-R-T Javvurt.
Javert: Repeat after me Zsah...Zsah....
Percy: Oh! Zsa-Zsa! Like the Gabor sister! Well I personally have always prefered Eva.
Javert: (Looks for gun)

Posted: 12/11/05 at 8:17pmI think we need to remember that "recognizable" most likely means that these people are associated with Broadway in people's minds. Sure, Broderick is a huge name, but people are more apt to think Ferris Beuller than The Producers or The Odd Couple, at the moment anyway. Glenn Close is a bit of a mystery, but the other two make perfect sense. When I think "Broadway," I think of Bernadette, Julie Andrews and Liza Minnelli.

Which sucks. Recently, I said something about his work in musicals, my sister said "Oh, yeah, he was the voice of Lumiere in Beauty and the Beast."
Don't worry, I took care of her.

#44re: Most Recognizable Name in Broadway
Posted: 12/11/05 at 8:44pmwhen i read recognizable, i instantly thought of one who crosses genres. Wouldn't Harvey( known by one name must mean something) fall into that category?
#45re: Most Recognizable Name in Broadway
Posted: 12/11/05 at 8:48pmJulie Andrews takes the cake totally. Matthew Broderick is also a big name. And, the most reconized voice, as my friends call him, the "Timon Guy"- Nathan Lane

You know the weird thing is that there are levels of fame for certain celebrities. Here's the way I see it
Movie stars (Most fame)
TV stars (Lot of fame)
Broadway stars (Some fame)
Voice-over artists (No fame at all)

Not sure how on earth Chita could be considered the third most recognizable name when she's done almost no film or tv work. Without that kind of mainstream recognition, she can't even be considered in the top 25. Andrews, Lansbury, Lane and Broderick, Hugh Jackman? Yes; Chita? No.
