Greekmusicalfan, I was just going to ask that! Because Richard Rogers, Stephen Sondheim and Andrew Lloyd Webber are also VERY recognizably musical theater. Also, i was surprised Mary Martin wasn't mentioned.
What about Jason Alexander -- EVERYONE knows who he is...
Or Alan Alda?
Or Alec Baldwin?
Or Kevin Spacey?
Or Al Pacino?
Or are we limiting it to people primarily known for Broadway, because certainly all of those above have been associated with it.
I woulde definintyly agree w/ the Lloyd Webber and Rodgers & Hammerstein thing; very recognizable. Sondheim probably not as much to be honest, I think his fame is more contained.
Not really, everyone knows Sondheim because every cultured person is supposed to like him. They bring him up when they're feeling pretencious.
but the majority of uncultured America probably doesn't have a clue who he is because they're more concerned with seeing Phantom or the Sound of Music than Sweeney Todd.
Liza Minnelli makes me think of Broadway everytime i see her...she is like the trademark of NY.
and Glenn Close is a great actress.
i'm not sure about glenn close.
but what about Nathan Lane?
well...Glenn is definityly not the most recognizable name in Bway...but just saying she is awesome and she won a Tony for best actress in a musical.
Someone beat me to it but I'm saying Nathan Lane.
I was going to mention him, but in thinking about it, I realized that a lot of my non theatre obsessed friends don't know who he is. They all know know Matthew Broderick tho.
Can anyone post the list for those of us who aren't Variey subscribers?

John Lithgow is kinda recognizable, and Hugh Jackman. Considering Denzel Washington was in Julius Ceaser this summer he could be a recognizable Broadway name.
I think we need to remember that "recognizable" most likely means that these people are associated with Broadway in people's minds. Sure, Broderick is a huge name, but people are more apt to think Ferris Beuller than The Producers or The Odd Couple, at the moment anyway. Glenn Close is a bit of a mystery, but the other two make perfect sense. When I think "Broadway," I think of Bernadette, Julie Andrews and Liza Minnelli.

Mabye he's not the most recognizable name, but what about Jerry Orbach? He has certainly been in a lot of shows on broadway.

Yes, but he's more remembered for his work on Law and Order.
Which sucks. Recently, I said something about his work in musicals, my sister said "Oh, yeah, he was the voice of Lumiere in Beauty and the Beast."
Don't worry, I took care of her.

Actually, I think the most recognizable name in Broadway is Broadway itself...
when i read recognizable, i instantly thought of one who crosses genres. Wouldn't Harvey( known by one name must mean something) fall into that category?
Julie Andrews takes the cake totally. Matthew Broderick is also a big name. And, the most reconized voice, as my friends call him, the "Timon Guy"- Nathan Lane

You know the weird thing is that there are levels of fame for certain celebrities. Here's the way I see it
Movie stars (Most fame)
TV stars (Lot of fame)
Broadway stars (Some fame)
Voice-over artists (No fame at all)
Did you read the part of the article that says they were trying to get Chita on a Coors Beer Can because Latino's drink Coors and will come see Chita... LOL!!!

Not sure how on earth Chita could be considered the third most recognizable name when she's done almost no film or tv work. Without that kind of mainstream recognition, she can't even be considered in the top 25. Andrews, Lansbury, Lane and Broderick, Hugh Jackman? Yes; Chita? No.
