Okay... so the search function only brought up people saying "I wish it would come to Broadway..." but I know that it was either actually in talks to become a Broadway musical, or it was just a rumor... anyone know the truth?
rumor.
Just a rumor at the moment.
Baz Luhrmann is actually working on the musical adaptation of his movie, "Strictly Ballroom." Perhaps, after that, he'll consider "Moulin Rouge."
mwaaaaaaah I love Baz Luhrmann

I wish it wasn't a rumor!!!!!
If Moulin Rouge went to Broadway I would die and go to heaven!!! I LOVE THAT MOVIE!!!!
.....I can't imagine it being that hard to adapt to the stage... of course there would be a few changes but I can see the movie coming to life on stage easily.... and it would be so freaking amazing!!!!
(do you think Nicole Kidman and Euan McGreggor would come do Brdwy if this show ever opens???) lol (hey i can dream can't I!)

it's be an INSANE adaptation, crazy! i wish it would come to bway!
Well its not ENTIRELY rumor...I heard an interview with Baz Luhrman that after Strictly Ballroom he wants to adapt Moulin Rouge for stage...maybe in Vegasm where a theatre would be built around the production. But it is not so soon.

Honestly, I can't wait for the Strictly Ballroom musical. That was a greaaaaat movie. I could wait for Moulin Rouge on stage. As much as I loved the movie (and believe me I do - I've watched it more than I can count), I don't think any amount of staging or effects could do it the same justice that the cinematography did.

i love how vegas build's theatres for shows...(not the sarcasm!) Does anyone else seem to notice how absurd that seems?
Maybe it's silly Vegas does that, but at least some shows may have a home longer than they do on Broadway. But in some cases it's like a rape on the art. So it goes both ways.
I love this movie! I wish it would come to bway, and I would seriously die if Ewan was in it, he is soo awesome. But I can't think of anyone for Satine. hmmm....
I'm guessing a lot of fans are setting themselves up for a big let-down. Baz Lurman's "Moulin Rouge" is a movie that thrives on cinematic techniques: Fast edits, ramping film speeds, and scratch & grain -tpye effects throughout. It's riddled with composite shots. This amazing artistic style he branded it with is part of this particular story's fabric.
To remove all of this, and leave it "land locked" on a stage would severely alter what an audience would see. (Yes, I saw his "La Boheme.") I'm not saying it wouldn't and couldn't be successful, but Baz would have to invent it all over again to make it work in a theatre. (Think Julie Taymor's creative approach to "Lion King" --- tell the story a whole different, fresh way, although I'm not suggesting he use puppets!)
There's another high hurdle to get over... the song licensing. It's one thing to do that for a film (which was an enormous nightmare, I understand). But to try to license all those different songs for a stage show is even more daunting. They gave up on "Funny Girl" for Broadway and ended up writing an entirely original score (not their original plan). It wasn't until they made the movie version that they were able to afford licensing Fanny Brice's original songs and put them in as originally conceived by the creative team. And licensing has gotten tougher and more expensive since then, not easier. The jukebox shows running now are all from a single artist or team's catalogue. "Moulin Rouge" has everything AND the kitchen sink in it (from a song standpoint).
I just think the creatives and producers will have to come a long way before we see "Moulin Rouge" on a Braodway stage. (Unless, of course, they hack it together quickly and badly, just to get it on its feet. I would prefer they wait and get it right.)
