I thought that Princess Diaries would be good.
Yeah, I like originals myself, but, as others said, it rarely happens. Princess Bride would be cool.
Is Lord of the Rings still coming or is that a no?

I'm sick and tired of people complaining about the "trend" of adapting things into musicals.
It's been happening since Broadway started, basing shows off of previously existing material.

THE GOLDEN GIRLS
Picture it, Broadway, 200s.
(Wow, that was an incredibly lame joke)

I hate to break it to you all, but there RARELY are truly original musicals. Almost every musical, new or old, has been adapted from a previous work, whether it be a film, novel, biography, or straight play."
AND?
Oh btw, you aren't "breaking" anything to me, I am well aware of the fact that most shows are based on another source. It doesn't change the fact that the lack of originality is sad.

How is it unoriginal? Artists are inspired by the works they read or see and want to adapt it for the stage.
Most if the time it features a completely new book and score.
Sounds pretty original to me.
You seem to think it's so easy to sit down and come up with a completely original storyline, characters, book and score.
You want it? You do it. It's not as simple as you think.
Most artists, whether they be writers, composers, choreographers or even painters are inspired to come up with their works by something they experienced in real life. They rarely sit down and create something out of the blue. Are you calling all of those artists unoriginal, too?

Actually I have written several small shows that are performed by the children/teens in the theatre program I head out here in California.
I am pretty sure that you and everyone else on here, understand waht I mean by "original" so I find no need to argue my point. There seems to be several books, movies, music, that artist come up with that are NEW and ORIGINAL, why is it so hard to write an NEW musical with an ORIGINAL score, and not simply pick a "cute" movie like Legally Blonde, and transfer it to the stage with some songs. When I hear about the future line up of new musicals in the works i.e. Shrek, 9 to 5, Princess Bride (which I think was cancelled) etc, I get a bad taste in my mouth. Maybe I am asking too much from art. I just feel bored with these ideas. I would love to see a great show with great charcters, and beautiful music, that is "out of the blue"
now if you'll excuse me, i have to continue writing my musical version of Schnidler's List....

So shows like HELLO DOLLY, SWEENEY TODD, CABARET, CHICAGO, THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA, INTO THE WOODS, GYPSY, WEST SIDE STORY, THE APPLE TREE, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, EVITA and LES MISERABLES are, in your opinion, unoriginal?

let's go back to my first post, shall we? I said I am tired of MOVIES being made into musicals. That was my main cimplaint. I am sick of movies like LB, SHREK, 9 to 5, etc. Apparently I am offending you with MY opinion, so let's just end this little chat. In fact, nevermind, I agree with you, I think that there should be nothing but movie musicals made next. In addition to my Schnidler's List musical, I am going to start writing, Sybil the muscial, Snakes on a Plane the musical, Borat the musical, and Corssroads the musical, hopefully Brit can be in it!!!!

No, you said you wanted some ORIGINAL musicals.
And I simply pointed out that what most people think are "original" musicals...technically are not.
You then responded claiming that you wanted some "out of the blue" musicals. So, by your definition, the shows I mentioned are NOT original.

guess not
And I said ORIGINAL, referring to the newer musicals that opened or are in the making

Names, please? I'm not being snarky, I just can't think of any, aside from Drowsy. (And even that wouldn't be in existance without stereotypical characters popularized by old musicals.) I admit my lack of brain power today, haha.
#45re: Movie Musicals
Posted: 4/3/07 at 12:21pmI almost posted one for Jukebox, but I know I'd be killed for that since there are already a bunch that have been flops, although I think that Chicago (the band) would have good material for a musical, if they didn't give it a bad plot.

I agree with the orginal poster.
I think that The Princess Diaries and the Parent Trap could be good musicals.
#47re: Movie Musicals
Posted: 4/3/07 at 12:40pmYeah, the only thing with Parent Trap is where the heck do the twins come from? Of course, they could use two girls and claim that they are identical. But it is kind of pointless. lol

TIMES SQUARE.
The 1980 film about two teenage girls on the mean streets of Times Square (pre-Covenant House, back when it was fun). Nikki is a throwaway teen living on the street who wishes to be a rockstar, Pammy is a rich girl from Park Avenue whose father is leading the Times Square Renaissance (hence, Disney-fication), and also driving her crazy. They meet in a mental hospital and against medical advice run off to live in on one of the Hudson River piers in an abandoned shipping terminal. They befriend a rebellious DJ named Johnny Laguardia who puts them on the air as the Sleeze Sisters, and hence Nikki's dream of rock stardom begins to take flight. Pammy's anxiety is healed through her friendship with Nikki.
This has Best Musical written all over it. Please, someone write it!!!!
