I think if they added in more songs from pop culture, they could flush out Moulin Rouge in to a full musical.
Also, a musical about Britney Spears to the music of Britney Spears. I wrote down possible ideas already!

FYI: there has already been a Lord Of The Rings musical
it was in 3 acts and played in Canada and London

(500) Days of Summer as a musical
The Princess Diaries as a musical
I think the music of Lady Gaga would be a good choice.
The music of Mariah Carey from the 90's. Her ballads would be show stoppers

One of the first times I posted here was my idea for a Musical of the movie "Bronco Billy". The story's great..bunch of wannabe's put on a wild west show( i.e. Billy is a former shoe salesman.)The movie had some country songs from Merle Haggard & others. I'm thinking Willie Nelson music would fit right in. Country music is hot now, and there aren't many Broadway shows using it.

Laura Osnes would be lovely in Jennifer Garner's role as Jenna Rink.

As a young boy I would listen to Diana Ross Greatest Hits as I would fall asleep. I would imagine the songs were taking place on stage in musical theatre format, telling the stories of a love and heartbreak.
- Tender Mercies with music and lyrics by Mary Chapin Carpenter and Jason Isbell
- Moonstruck with music and lyrics by Pasek & Paul
- Sideways with music and lyrics by Kerrigan & Lowdermilk
- Where the Wild Things Are
- Gosford Park
Blur's PARKLIFE and THE GREAT ESCAPE are completely theatrical. Just hire someone to whip up a book and there you go. Maybe you could adapt some of Mike Leigh's earlier works, like LIFE IS SWEET or HIGH HOPES.
Are we discussing these suggestions or just making lists?
CHINATOWN's plot and action depend on sheep, diverted water, desertification of orange groves, etc. It's already a perfect film; I can't see what is to be gained by putting it on stage (and having to cut central elements).
MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING is basically an adaptation of the same director's MURIEL'S WEDDING, only set in American and watered-down to accommodate an American superstar. Again, the Australian original is very nearly perfect, but at this point would seem like a remake of the grossly inferior MAMMA MIA!
All IMO, of course.
Best 12's THE CHINA SYNDROME is both timely and conveniently set in interior spaces.
Chinatown would be difficult, not just because of the set pieces required to make it work, but because film noir, a film genre defined as much by its visual set pieces and cinematic approach as by its tone and written content. Film noir is hard to approximate well onstage. City of Angels uses it in a tongue-in-cheek way, while Sweet Smell of Success, a more straight noir, got mixed reviews that questioned whether the noir feel even works onstage.
^^^^Of course Sophocles pulled it off, centuries before film noir had been defined.
Maybe if somebody took the Robert Evans screenplay but went back to its source (OEDIPUS), there might be an interesting way to approach it.

That's why I said "take another crack."
Oh and to the fella who suggested Road House:
I'm a fan of noir and lately I've been contemplating the experimentation of the genre in other forms i.e. onstage and in television. I think a stage adaptation of Double Indemnity, The Big Sleep, or some other classic could successfully capture the essence of noir onstage. Minus a car chase or two lol. I don't believe noir is limited to film. If City of Angels could do it ironically why can't it be done seriously?
I'd love to see a season of American Horror Story with a noir theme stretched from the 20's or 30's to the modern era. Perhaps whith shades of pulp novels, cursed objects, supernatural vigilantes, blaxploitation, brainwashing, & gangsters. I know some of those elements may seem a bit disparate but AHS is kind of known for that right?
Sorry to hijack your thread for a moment there songandanceman but I tried to sneak some suggestions in as well :)
My first thought upon seeing this thread was The Hours. It's such a stunning film and I think it could be a really beautiful stage play as well.
My brother's working on a Cure musical and I'd like to see a Carpenters musical along the lines of Jersey Boys or Beautiful.
I recall hearing that Ryan Murphy was looking to bring a Cher musical to Broadway but I don't know if that's still on. Her music is so theatrical already that I think it could work.
