I LOVE Billy Joel's music but I really have no desire to go see someone else sing it and have people dance around to it. But then the whole 'Contact' and 'Movin Out' genre does nothing for me. I like dance and I like musicals, but I don't like the concept dance thing
It's probably just me.

Posted: 9/28/04 at 8:53amI've never been a huge fan of Joel's work - I think he's a good pop composer, but I've never owned a recording of his work. I'm not one to see "dance" shows in general. I waited to see Contact on television because I couldn't bring myself to pay for it. I'm kinda the same way with this show - no desire to see it yet.

Posted: 9/28/04 at 10:15amThe show is beautiful. Joel's music is what it is - good mainstream pop music. but tharp's choreo, direction, and translation are outstanding. wonderful to watch. it's much better than Contact or Swing in terms of telling a story through movement.

Posted: 9/28/04 at 1:45pmNo one is basing the entire genre of ballet on this single work. That would be as absurd as basing all of ballet on Ballanchine or Bourne or basing all musicals on Rodgers and Hammerstein or Kotis and Hollman. Movin' Out is a modern ballet that mixes various dance styles including ballet, modern, and jazz, but it is a story told through dance in which the characters do not speak or sing. Thus, it is a ballet, regardless of whether Glebb likes it or not (which is now abundantly clear).

I love this show. I've seen it a number of times now, and everytime, it's just as good, if not better, than the last.
I don't see how people can say it has no plot. Not only does it have a plot, but it has a very moving one, I think. Eddie's journey is amazingly portrayed through the songs and dance, and some of the actual ACTING in scenes like "Goodnight Siagon" and "River of Dreams" and such is amazing. It's the only show that has REALLY made me cry.
So yes, I think it's incredible. I love ballet, and I love Billy, but the story and the performances really do it for me too.

I didn't know the songs the first time I saw the show. The only ones I knew were Shameless (and only 'cause Garth Brooks sings it too) and "We didn't start the fire." I knew what was going on and I found it incredibly moving.

I don't love it because I think nothing has changed about Tharp since her wonderful work in the 70s. I think her early work for The Joffrey and ABT was wonderful. Her work for the film HAIR was amazing.
MOVIN OUT in my opinion is a copy of a show called BILLBOARDS which Joffrey did over ten years ago. It was an evening of dance to PRINCE, in four short acts. At least each act had a different choreographer.
