How should one go about moving seats for the 2nd act of a show? Is it appropriate to ask the usher during intermission if there are any open seats in the, say front mezz, if you're sitting in the rear mezz? Or does it just come across as rude and you shouldn't do it?

I rarely need to switch seats but if you see open seats that are free, you should go for it. I went to Phantom to watch Norm Lewis, and this garbage person was chomping, slurping, and chewing in my ear during the first act. So, I spotted three empty third row seats in the Orchestra, and moved down there during intermission with no issues. No one cared. It may be different at other places. Like during Bridges of Madison County, I checked with the usher and the place was so empty he told me I could sit in the empty boxes on the sides. It just depends if the ushers have an issue with it.

I have always asked when I have had trouble with my purchased seats, either because of sightlines, large or noisy neighbors, or being separated from friends. Rarely am I refused a change, if available. Just recently changed from a front orch seat on the far side for On The Town to a center orch seat a few rows back. Not a problem. Always ask. I don't think anybody sees it as rude.

As an avid rusher, it is very rare that I do not move during intermission.

I used to ask an usher every time, but I was never once told "no, you cannot move." Instead, every usher, in more then a dozen theaters, told me it was absolutely fine and to take whatever seat I could find. So that's what I do!

Don't over think it.

If you see an open seat during the show that's empty and you like once the act one curtain goes down and the house lights come on you go fast as you can to that seat.

Why ask an usher. They usually could care less. If you want to ask anyone ask the people around that seat "hi, was anyone sitting here?" 9 times out of 10 they'll say "nope" then you say "great, I could barely see certain things from my seat so I thought I'd move"

Opportunity knocks, take it.

When I'm in a crappy seat I usually glance around right before the lights go down for empty seats that are better. During the show in a bright scene I may take a quick glance to see if the seats still there come intermission I'll move as fast as I can to that seat.

Only time I talk to the head usher is when I have a standing room ticket when the show isn't sold out "Rent" would sell SRO even though the show wasn't sold out or when at "Chicago" when it def wasn't sold out I'd have Stanung Room via a cast member cause they can reserve them....I'd always go to the head usher say "I have a standing room ticket any chance there might be an empty seat?" She'd usually look at her seat list to see what's available and I've always been seated somewhere in amazing seats

Y never ask an usher- I just go for it when I see it- and I do this for concerts as well- but, not before a long enough period of time to be sure that the seat will not be used. I have never had a problem doing this.
