I thought about this last night when Tracy Letts and Patina Miller both won. Previous actors have won for playing the same roles.
George in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? has yielded a total of three wins (Arthur Hill, Bill Irwin, and now Tracy Letts. Is this the "Rose in Gypsy" role for men?
Speaking of Rose in Gypsy. Three wins: Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly, Patti LuPone.
Patina Miller and Ben Vereen both won for the Leading Player in Pippin.
Joel Grey and Alan Cumming both won for the Emcee in Cabaret.
Glynnis Johns and Catherine Zeta-Jones both won for Desriee in A Little Night Music.
Ezio Pinza and Paulo Szot both won for Emile DeBecque in South Pacific.
What are others that come to mind?
Interesting fact, though-when Patina won, the Leading Player became the first role to garner a Tony for each gender.
The Leading Player is also the only character to have both a man and a women win for playing the role.
Any other characters this could ever happen with??
Edit: sorry dreaming, i was typing when you posted!

George Hearn and Douglas Hodge - Albin in La Cage aux Folles
Interesting that the Emcee in Cabaret was in 2 different categories each time...
A Funny thing happened on they way to the Tonys, Pseudolus: Jason Alexander won a Tony for "Jerome Robbins Broadway" in which he portrayed Pseudolus, among other characters so slightly more than 3 for Pseudolus...

That could be up to debate.. Tom Conti won lead actor in 1979 for playing Ken Harrison in Whose Life Is It Anyway. A few months later, the play was revived with Mary Tyler Moore as Claire Harrison, which was essentially a female version of the same role. She received a special Tony in 1980 for the role.
Cool stuff. It seems some roles are most definitely "Tony-friendly."
Besty, that's always something I've found fascinating about the Tonys that you don't really get with film and the Oscars much. Sure, there are Oscar-friendly roles when we think of literary figures and even characters from plays that have numerous film adaptations, but remakes do not have the same place at the Oscars than revivals do on Broadway. It's just so interesting to see what roles the Tonys keep coming back to, the Tracy Letts win (the one I was the most excited about since I think that's the only winning performance I saw) certainly made me think about this too.

Joe Mantegna and Liev Schreiber each won a Best Featured Actor Tony for playing Richard Roma in the original production and first Broadway revival of GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS. Bobby Cannavale was not nominated for this year's revival.
Billy Flynn (Chicago), believe Jerry Orbach and James Naughton (revival)
^ Jerry didn't win for Chicago.
EDIT: George Rose won that year for My Fair Lady.
Best12Bars - my fault, he won for "Promises Promises. Guess I had "senior" moment.
The original production of Guys and Dolls won tonys for its Sky (Robert Alda) and Sarah (Isabel Bigley, featured); the revival won tonys for its Nathan (Nathan Lane) (Peter Gallagher's Sky was nominated) and Miss Adelaide (Faith Prince).
It will be interesting what happens with the upcoming revival of Real Thing.
Nathan Lane lost to Gregory Hines in 1992.
He won for Forum and The Producers.
yankeefan7---happens all the time to me!
Another thing I thought about as I looked up who DID win (when Orbach lost for Chicago), was I realized there are roles that yielded Tonys a second time around, when the original performer lost.
Example: George Rose won Best Actor for playing Alfred Doolittle in a My Fair Lady revival, but Stanley Holloway lost (in the featured category) for the original production. Jerry Orbach lost for Chicago, but James Naughton won for playing the role in the revival.
A few others that come instantly to mind:
Ethel Merman losing for Gypsy when three other women have won for playing the part.
Bebe Neuwirth winning for playing Velma in Chicago, and Chita losing when she created the role.
Another from the recent Tonys: Irene Ryan was nominated and lost for Pippin, but Andrea Martin won for the same role in the revival.
I'm sure there are many more.
EDIT: I know, my eyes are going to cross if I keep this up.
Besty, I'm sure there's tons of those, but one that immediately came to mind was poor Chita Rivera who also didn't win for WEST SIDE STORY even though Rita Moreno and Karen Olivo won an Oscar and Tony, respectively. She also had to see Catherine Zeta-Jones and Bebe Neuwirth win for a role she created and didn't win for.
Following besty's examples I will add one:
Debbie Allen nominated for her role as "Anita" in the 1980 revival of WEST SIDE STORY (she lost) and Karen Olivo winning for playing the role in the 2009 revival.
LOL...ray-andallthatjazz86 we posted @ the same time. Great minds think alike!
Chita Rivera wasn't nominated for her performance in WEST SIDE STORY.
