EVERYONE MUST GO SEE THIS PLAY. NOW.
Wow, I definitely didn't expect to like this show as much as I did. I was completely blown away and impressed by this amazing new play. It it so well acted and so well written that I was completely absorbed in the material the entire show - something that, with past plays this season (VIRGINIA WOOLF, DEMOCRACY,) I can't say the same of.
As Father Flynn, Brian F. O'Byrne is just perfect and, again, seamless. Cherry Jones is just brilliant from top to bottom - I couldn't take my eyes off of her. The best actress category this year is definitely going to be a tough competition - right now, certainly between Kathleen Turner and Jones. I can't even decide for myself yet who I would rather see win - both are equally deserving, in my mind. But there is no doubt about it - Cherry Jones is absolutely amazing in this play.
Heather Goldenhersh is also, not surprisingly, perfect. He part doesn't really allow her to be brilliant and amazing, but she's absolutely perfect.
And finally, Adriane Lenox who has, what? 5 or 6 minutes of stage time? Wow. She deserves a Tony Award for that performance, and being that this year's supporting actress category isn't all that clear cut, she very well might win the award, and she ABSOLUTELY deserves it. After she exited the stage after her small (and powerful) scene, the theatre erupted in applause and cheers - she's THAT good.
I really can't recommend this play enough - it's absolutely amazing. It is so incredibly well written that I can't praise it enough.
A word to the wise: They do not sell student rush tickets to this show, but they have balcony for $26.25. The balcony only has two rows, and the first row is FINE, but if all they have the second row (and you can easily come back,) then come back another day or something. They are impossible seats. You could always move down, but tonight's performance was virtually sold out.
My only complaint with the play:

When Mrs. Muller comes into Suster Aloysius' office and reveals that her son is "that way," and that's actually why her husband beats him, I found it pretty unbelievable. Not impossible enough for the play to lose merit, but I didn't buy into the notion that this shy, middle school boy is already out of the closet to his parents. It would have been more believable if this were a high school rather than a middle school, but then again middle school students might be more vulnerable than high school students. It's really not a big deal, it's just something that bothered me.
