Musical Theatre Pet Peeves — Page 5

I saw RENT the other night at Starlight Theatre in KC, and while it's obviously not as nice and formal as indoor, smaller theatres, there were a group of people there (I'm guessing RENTHEADS, although I doubt that people that were truly such huge fans of the show would be this rude), but EVERY time a character came on stage, this group of people would shout the name of the character, so at the beginning of the show it's completely silent and all of sudden you hear this screaming group of people yelling MARK MARK MARK MARK! And they did it throughout the entire show. I was about to go insane.

The thing I hate most is when the people in back of you talk really loudly so you can hear them when your really trying to focous on the show. When I saw DRS on Gregs last day, a person was on their cell phone and was playing Mrs. Pacman. I thought I was about to shoot her. All I kept hearing was "Eat the ghost! Get it! Get It! Come on, YOU STUPID YELLOW EATING THING! EATING THE FREAKING GHOST!!" I'm lucky my heads still attached to my neck.
Also when I saw Wicked the little girl in front of me kept telling her mom that she's hungry. So guess what she gets during intermission? Not one... Not two... but 3 bags of M&M's, soda and pringles. I couldn't hear anything except for Megan Hilty's belting at the end because this little girl loves to unwrapp all of her M&M bags a certian way and slurp her soda.

And no elevators. That pisses me off a lot.

broadwayguy4, it isn't as easy to climb mountains when you are in your Fifties, lol. I felt like Corey's mother in Barefoot in the Park. I guess I've been spoiled here in L.A. and elsewhere theaters can be recently built, because they think to add such conveniences. Actually, now I think about it, except for maybe the Pantages Theater in Hollywood, we don't have any stage theaters that look from the outside like Broadway theaters. They build most of them here now on the scale of concert halls (like Lincoln Center) and they definitely need elevators.

But I do feel sorry for those wheelchair bound, like you say. I think it was at Spamalot at the Shubert in NYC, where the bathroom for men in the balcony was actually down part of the ways through a stairwell stairs. I can't imagine how anyone in a wheelchair would have gotten down to it.

I hate those poeple that have to be the last person to clap. I mean WTF. Is there some competition Im not aware of?

I also hate when people are like "Where has musical theater gone?" When talking about Wicked or some of the newer shows. I mean, I know everyone has their own opinions about it but come on, not all of us are old enough to know what theater "use" to be.

Obviously, I adore Wicked and am proud to say it...*Ducks possible flying objects*

It bothers me when people spell Rent in all caps. Or "R.E.N.T."

Annoying people in the audience.

I hate it when you go to RENT and all of these RENTheads in the first two rows scream for every character... especially Angel. They're not screaming for the actors, in which case I semi-understand. But the characters? I mean, GET A LIFE.

And then, it's like you're at a BSB concert! They scream after every song, and YOU CANT HEAR THE LINES THAT THE ACTORS ARE SAYING. It's a show, not a freaking CONCERT!

I hate when people say a show gets "cancelled." Shows CLOSE. They're only cancelled if the run gets cancelled before it opens.

Audience members over-reacting, esp in Wicked when Elphie melts.

I hate flip-flops everywhere. They make that annoying sound.
