1) There are TONS of Tony prediction threads already -- Try the search function.

2) You forgot to include Christine Ebersole -- the overwhelming favorite and very likely winner of the Best Actress ctegory.

3) Michele is only eligible in the Lead Actress category

re: Musical tony award nominations predictions

Margo-Thanks for pointing that out. Christine Ebersole (knocking on wood as I type this!) is the overwhelming favorite to win best actress in a musical. (Gawd, Ben Brantley is giving glowing reviews of her performance. The Tony is the only award she hasn't won, aside from the Lortel (what were they thinking, anyway?!)!)
My predictions, for the record:
Best Musical: Grey Gardens, Curtains, Spring Awakening, Legally Blonde
Best Actress in a Musical: CHRISTINE EBERSOLE (who will win, I predict), Donna Murphy, Audra McDonald, Kristin Chenoweth, Debra Monk
Best Featured Actress in a Musical: Mary-Louise Wilson, Barbara Walsh, Linda Balgord (maybe), Karen Ziemba

Best Featured Actor: John McMartin, John Gallagher, Jr., Michael Barresse, Edward Hibbert

Best Actor in a Musical: Raul Esparza, David Hyde-Pierce, Michael Cerveris, Jonathan Groff, last spot up for grabs

Those are my predictions-Christine should not have been overlooked so in your original post.

Isn't it bizarre that the original poster left out the one nominee we'd all pretty much bet money on? Haha...

No offense budd, that wasn't directed as in insult. It happens.

re: Musical tony award nominations predictions

It does seem odd that the poster overlooked Christine Ebersole, considering her glowing reviews and the probability of her winning.
As someone in another thread stated: It's (the best actress in a musical category) isn't about who's going to win so much as it's about who's going to be nominated". (It's pretty much a given, but I really must knock on wood as I type this.)

Everyone keeps saying the Tony is the only award Christine hasn't won. Didn't she win one for 42nd Street though?

re: Musical tony award nominations predictions

I think they mean the Tony is the only award she hasn't won for GG. She did win for 42nd Stret.

re: Musical tony award nominations predictions

I think people are referring to the Tony being the only award she hasn't won FOR THIS ROLE. She already won the Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle Award, a Drama League award, and Obie last year when the show was at Playwrights, Off-Broadway.

Thank you! I was very confused as to why everyone kept saying that.

I thought Les Miz and A Chorus Line weren't eligable for the revival Tony...
SA Better win best musical...

re: Musical tony award nominations predictions

Les Miz and A Chorus Line are eligible for the revival Tony and their casts are eligible for the acting categories, but the design elements are not eligible, since they are recreations of work that was Tony-nominated (and in some cases Tony-winning) in their original productions.

Margo- I'm curious, as everyone respects your opinion, which musical you think should win best musical.

There are still a couple of shows that have yet to open, so ask me again in a month or so.

Well, then, out of GREY GARDENS, SPRING AWAKENING, MARY POPPINS, and CURTAINS - if you've seen them - which would you award to Tony to at this point in time.

re: Musical tony award nominations predictions

Hmmmmmmm..............I don't have a clear, unqualified favorite this season, so far. To my eyes (and ears and brain and heart), there were no masterpieces this year -- I see flaws and drawbacks and dead spots and weaknesses (as well as some positives) in all of them, so I don't have a horse in this race and am not rooting for anything. So, for now, I'll just sit back, put out my "gone fishin'" sign and let everyone else fight this one out. And when the whole mess is over with in May and everything's limped into town and opened, I'll sift through the dregs of this season and see if any gold nuggets magically appear in the pan.......

Margo, I checked your blog for a review of CURTAINS but didn't see it. Have you reviewed CURTAINS, MARY POPPINS, and SOME MEN yet?

I'm on a sort of sabbatical from writing reviews at the moment (too busy). Perhaps, I'll get back to it and catch up again sometime soon.

Hey, well the dregs of this season are already better than the dregs of last season.
