There's also this book by Gregory McGuire...somethign about witches or something, something to do with the wizard of oz. That would never ever work as a musical.

They never mentioned American Beauty as a musical - it was written as a PLAY before a movie, and I think that would work amazingly well.
People didn't think Hairspray would work either. Look at what people said about The Fully Monty - don't judge The Wedding Singer yet, I have a feeling we will be pleasantly surprised.

Well, I didn't like Hairspray. I thought it was such fluff (as is Wicked, but i enjoyed Wicked more, dont ask why, just did) And what pissed me off is that it was a movie with such great moral values and told it in a way only John Waters could. Then they made it like "Okay, add dancing, the brightest costumes, sets, and lights ever! and get a bunch of talented peopel and put them on speed!" didnt thrill me. They are gonan do the same thing with cry baby and im going to go to the theatre when it opens and protest against it.

I don't agree with you. FLUFF is a word that people use to describe musicals too loosely. Everyone expected HAIRSPRAY to be fluff - that's why it was such a revelation when it opened - because it was the complete opposite. It has amazing moral values, wonderful messages, and complex form that are all rare these days. They did it all tastefully while having fun.
Wicked is fluff, you're right.
The Producers, is nasty fluff. The worst fluff of all? Never Gonna Dance. But to say that about Hairspray, that just goes to show that you have severely missed the boat when you went to see it. I doubt anyone in that show was on speed - it's brilliantly written, and the only tony award winning musical in the past few years that actually deserved to win the tony. Millie was an abortion, and Avenue Q barely deserved it. Hairspray is nearly perfect in every way, and it's the farthest thing from fluff - it's smart, genuine, real theatre.
