I am so not going to discuss the wonders of PETA on a broadway musical board. I refuse to open that can of worms (even if it means saving those poor little innocent worms from living in a can all their lives)

I think GOLDEN GIRLS is a good idea too! There actually was a live Golden Girls show in NYC last year and it was getting ready to transfer to an open ended Off-Broadway run but then they had troubles with rights and it folded. I hear it was great. It was all men and they enacted actual episodes.
I don't think there is such a thing as a musical idea that would never work. With good writers, talented actors, and an imaginative director, anything is possible.
The most successful musicals could have been considered bad ideas by less imaginative people:
LES MISERABLE= long boring book onstage? why?
THE LION KING= how the hell do you do a musical about lions and a meerkat and warthog onstage? and hyenas? and a stampede? ridiculous! can't be done... certainly can't be done well!
RENT= La Boheme as a rock musical? Why ruin La Boheme?
MY FAIR LADY= Rodgers & Hammerstein (of all people) tried to musicalize PYGMALION (the play MFL is based on), but ultimately decided it was impossible
CATS= a book of poems about cats?
THE PRODUCERS= it's already a great movie and you can't possibly find two stars who will make us forget Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder's performances

I didn't get that. In my opinion, all of them (with exception of producers and rent) are great shows. The Lion King is only great because of the director.

HAIRSPRAY is fluff. Fluff can have a message. Fluff can deal with moral values. Fluff often does.
WICKED has a message and deals with moral values too. I'd say WICKED is a much deeper show than HAIRSPRAY, actually.
By the way, I don't consider "fluff" to be a bad word when describing a musical. I have no problem with fluff.

Captain- the point is that BEFORE those shows came out, there were reasons (which I listed) in which to say that the shows could "never work."
And you make my point by mentioning Julie Taymor. That's my point. There is no such thing as a musical "that would never work." The right imaginative director can make anything work.

I agree with the director part.
Not on the WICKED is deeper than HAIRSPRAY part. I think WICKED is so flawed in its storyling and "message" that it needs to be rewritten.

being flawed has nothing to do with whether or not something is fluff or not
