What would have happened if...
NEXT TOR NORMAL had opened a month later, missing last year's Tony deadline, but being eligible for this years awards. Would it have managed to keep running until now? Would it have cleaned up at the 2010 ceremony?
FINIAN'S RAINBOW and RAGTIME had opened in the spring instead of last fall, earning the same stallar reviews? Would they be serius contenders for Best revival? Would teh shows have done better box office?
SPIDERMAN had actually made it's original scheduled opening in February of this season?
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

yes - and if the dog hadn't scratched its back it never would have caught the rabbit -
but interesting point non the less - and I do think N2N would still be running -- awards or not - most would have recognized the talented Ms. Ripley -

[What if] SPIDERMAN had actually made it's original scheduled opening in February of this season?
Well, it probably would have won Best Musical and Best Score considering what the other options are...

I don't think Next to Normal would still be running to be honest. A lot of why it's still running was the exposure it got from the Tony Awards and their TV performance. Without that, it wouldn't have had a shot. Now if it opened a year later instead of a month, it would have won everything.

Timing is everything.
I think that if Next to Normal, Grey Gardens, or Passing Strange opened this season, it would be the frontrunner for the Tony for Best Musical. None of this season's new musicals seems to be hitting that sweet spot of critical praise and audience response. While these 3 musicals didn't hit that sweet spot perfectly, they probably come closer than any of this season's options.
If it were still open, I think Finian's Rainbow would be the favorite for Best Revival of a Musical.
It doesn't sound like Spider-man was really ready; if it had been rushed through, it would have gotten some tech recognition but I think it would have been panned.

"serius"
Not a big fan of SERIUS. I prefer being SERIOUS. But anything is better than SIRUS radio!
