Most Bizarre Nominations (not detracting from talent, but just odd):
1. Brooks Ashmankasas
2. Laura Bell Bundy over Kristin Chenoweth (one blonde for another?)
3. Christian Borle (a great actor in a bad part)
4. Charlotte d'Amboise
5. Legally Blonde for Book and Score, but not Musical
Most Out-of-Left-Field Nomination: Brooks Ashmanksas
Most Deserving Nomination: Anthony Chisholm/John Earl Jelks; Jay Johnson
Most Overlooked: Steven Kunken, Marian Seldes

and here I thought this was going to be a thread devoted to High Fidelity's Scenic Design nomination. :)
Bill Nighy's lack of a nomination is criminal.

Agreed on both Marian Seldes and Steven Kunken being overlooked.
Ethan Hawk?!???? I guess the Nominators wanted some more star power to combat "The Sopranos". Very happy for the Radio Golf gents and Stark Sands.

If those you claim were overlooked were indeed eligible then they weren't overlooked, they just didn't get enough votes from the Tony committee to become a nominee.
Although I'm happy for Mary Poppins, I was pleasantly surprised by its nomination. I really want to know the behind the scene what the nomination committee talked about for giving a nod for MP and not for LoveMusik. Maybe they thought this is another catalogue musical so they didn't want to include this year (after JB)?
(I didn't think LB is good enough for a nod for the best musical, so I wasn't surprised there)
I thought LoveMusik was being considered a play and not a musical.....
^^ No.
I totally forgot about Nighy! ... apparently so did the nominating committee. That's really a shame.
Yankee, I agree that Borle is not in a great role, but the way I see it, he deserved a nomination for SPAMALOT a few years ago, so I'm glad he's getting one now to make up for it.
I am also thrilled for Anthony Chisholm and John Earl Jelks' nominations. I hope Chisholm wins!
I'm sad that Steven Kunken wasn't recognized either, but it was a tight category. I wouldn't take one of those other nominees out to put him in. I have no doubt that Kunken will have a nomination in his future within the next few years. He's a very versatile actor, and I'm sure we'll see him again on Broadway after FROST/NIXON.
As for Marian Seldes, who would you have removed from that category in order to insert Seldes?
I really want to know the behind the scene what the nomination committee talked about for giving a nod for MP and not for LoveMusik.
There is no "behind the scenes." It's not a round table discussion. It's a voting ballot. They are actually not allowed to talk openly during the meeting.
I was only really looking forward to three people getting nominated that I enjoyed (and since you threw in the High Fidelity line, I had to comment):
Ebersole - Grey Gardens
Esparza - Company
Orfeh - Legally Blonde
They were the standouts when I went to the theatre: glad to see others thought the same.

I would have removed Swoozie.
ETA: Regarding Borle, I completely forgot about his Spam snub. I'm glad he was nominated, but if only it were a better part.

4. Charlotte d'Amboise
Exactly. WHAT?? Erin Davie deserved that nomination. And I am pissed.
Are you kidding? Did you see her performance in this gorgeous revival of a George Bernard Shaw masterpiece? Seldes is a brilliant actress stuck working with absolute dreck up on that stage.
I would have removed Swoosie as well. Completely odd characterization, totally miscast.

I think the nods for Swooze, Ivey, HiFi's set, etc. are the way of the nominators saying "we remember October, don't worry!"

I guess I would have removed Swoosie. I really admire her as an actor, but I was not a fan of "Heartbreak House". I don't disagree that Marian is stuck in a quasi-stinker, but I feel bad that out of the two grande dames making mountains out of molehills in the piece, she has to arrive at the theater tonight feeling like the ugly theater stepchild.
I too am sad about Erin Davie. I'm always reminded when the nominations come out that with Tonys, Oscars, and Emmys...often the nominations reflect past work rather than present acheivement. I guess Charlotte was just such a case.
I agree with you about Steve Kunken's future prospects and I hope he comes out on the winning side of that past work/present acheivement scenario soon.
I am really sad The Pirate Queen didn't get nominated for scenic design. I thought that the show deserved at least that one nod for sure! Oh, and for the show's lighting also.

Really? Then what's the point to have a nominating committee?! Then those committee members actually really liked Mary Poppins?
My most overlooked would have to go to John Mahoney, Jason Danieley and Hugh Dancy. I was glad to see Boyd Gaines recognized, though.
I actually agree with all of your list! My one addition is Hal Prince, Tony wonder boy. He has more than anybody ever, and he wasn't nominated for best direction? There's a question to ponder.
itstheM, but the fact is that this time around, Hal Prince does a poor job in making LOVEMUSIK work. He shouldn't get a nomination just for existing.

5. Legally Blonde for Book and Score, but not Musical
You probably should have just put a period after the word "Book."
And re: 2. Laura Bell Bundy over Kristin Chenoweth (one blonde for another?)
To be fair to the committee, Bell really does a wonderful job trying to impersonate Kristin Chenoweth, so they honestly might have just gotten confused.
Also, Hugh Dancy being overlooked... egregious. (I can't believe that's the first time that word is being used in this thread. You gays should be ashamed of yourselves!) But congrats to Stark Sands on his nod.
Re: Erin Davie, not having seen Poppins or Curtains, I could easily get rid of Orfeh (or even Charlotte, for that matter). Oh, well...
I wish Erin had gotten nominated too. If for no other reason, than for GG to tie SA in number of nods.
That said, D'Amboise won't win, Mary Louise probably will.
Keeping fingers crossed for Christine!!!!!
I wouldn't be shocked to see D'Amboise win.
If the voters don't have any emotional attachment to Wilson, they'll sacrifice this category to award a performer who has always been reliable but never got a real break. I wouldn't be at all surprised.

Butley only got one nomination....that's so wrong.
Mary Poppins for Best Musical over LoveMusik or Legally Blonde!? WTF?
