Lauren Ambrose, Sher's Hennie in Awake and Sing, reputedly came close to getting Nellie in South Pacific and he famously wanted to star her in Funny Girl.

If she could sing it, she might prove an amazing Eliza.

Ambrose would be great in PYGMALION. Definitely if she can sing "I Could Have Danced All Night" (they can lower the keys if needed), I say go for it. Sooner or later she has to star in a Broadway show. I wish she had played Nellie, and one can only imagine what she'd have done with a role like Anna Loewens.

I like Sierra B. and Lauren W., but I would love to see Anika Noni Rose as Eliza! She has a wonderful voice, and I would love to see a non-white Eliza.

Every so often there was a rare moment of perfect balance when I soared above him.

Yes, me too. The Shaw Festival in Canada has an Indian young lady playing Eliza in Pygmalion this summer. This article claims she is the first woman of color to play Eliza in North America .....

That's so wonderful and she is beautiful. Thank you for sharing this! I would love for a WOC to play Eliza, but I doubt that will happen, unfortunately.

No, they can't lower the keys. What they can do is hire a true soprano to sing the role. The whole point of the song is how thrilling her change is and she demonstrates that musically by soaring up into the high notes.

Hire a true soprano to do the role or don't do the show!

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

Agree. If you are going to screw with the score simply to accommodate casting, just do Pygmalion.

It's not as if there aren't several women - yes, of all colors - who can beautifully sing the score as is and be right for the role.

Hands down agree that they should never change the keys to Eliza Doolittle- That's a true soprano role through and through, it would be criminal to change it.

Laura Osnes or Laura Benanti would be good, although as I've said before, I have a hard time buying Benanti as an ingenue as talented as she is.

I would like to see a Higgins closer to 40 than 50 and although Eliza should be young enough to almost be his daughter, I want someone who looks a bit more worldly even at her young age. I think more of a Wendy Hiller type than what we think of as an ingenue. Though, of course, what equally matters is if they can actually sing the part as I cannot listen to Martine McCutcheon's Eliza. That said, I hope they elect to do a more introspective "I Could Have Danced All Night" (like Marni Nixon's) than one that is more bombastic and a Freddy who is believable as an alternative love interest despite him not knowing how to make a living, but that's probably requesting too much.

Worsham would be excellent- stunning voice and her work in Gentleman's Guide showed her skill with comedy. Plus, she looks age appropriate for the role as well.

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
