Unfortunately, a generation of little girls who eventually see Into the Woods will think Sondheim ripped of My Little Pony.
My Little Sondheim
Being used to the original melody, this is REALLY subversive to listen to!
It's not plagiarism, but it's so clearly a ripoff. Wow!
I suppose he should be flattered ... ?

Not to mention all the bronies.

...and to clarify: I myself am not a "Brony". I found these clips becuase I was lookng at clips of Into the Woods, and people kept writing "At the Gala!" in the comments. So, I searched YouTube for "At the Gala".
Are there LuPonies out there, too?
bestie, you're killing me in this thread.
CumPony would be something else, entirely, methinks.
It's hard to believe there was never any legal action taken. If it was just the one song you might be able to call it a coincidence, but "Art of the Dress" is very obviously "Putting it Together." Even the lyrics are similar. "Thread by thread, I'm stitching it together." Really???
There is absolutely no way this wasn't cleared by an extensive team of legal experts. It may even qualify as parody. I love when these types of homages pop-up in projects for children.
I'm not a Brony, but the production value of this show is pretty freaking stellar. The lyrics actually rhyme!
There's no legal issue here. Plagiarism is very hard to prove. A certain number of notes and words have to be identical. Not "obviously" similar, but identical.
It might fall under parody, but I doubt that would hold up (if there even was a case here, which there isn't). They aren't spoofing the composer Sondheim or his shows directly, so parody doesn't work.
It's just a ripoff. Like a designer knockoff of a dress for $30 at Walmart.
When I read the title of this thread, I thought that it was going to be something like this.

As for the "My Little Pony" number, they can probably get away with it by calling it an "homage". Jonathan Larson did it to "Sunday" with his song "Brunch" in "Tick, Tick, Boom!"
And very few composers take it to court when it involves children's shows. Though, I do remember hearing an interview with a song-writer for "Sesame Street" who got taken to court because his song "Letter B" was too close to "Let It Be" by the Beatles. He lost in court. He basically got a slap on the wrist , $500 fine, which he had to pay to the owner of the Beatles song catalog. He had to write a $500 check to Michael Jackson.

It's no different than the stuff done for years on The Simpsons, Animaniacs, etc.
Remember "Les Miseranimals"?
