My NY visit- five shows, six days...

...and I actually only had plans to see one show! (And none of the five were Wicked.) :)

(the below is from my blog, nothing really groundbreaking as far as show reviews go, but I got a couple of ideas from posts here, so I figured I'd try and maybe return the favor)

So I was in NY from Tuesday 9/20 through Monday 9/26. Back when I was planning this trip it was to be a part apartment hunting, part job hunting trip, but in the meantime my NY roommate to be and I found a place, so my trip turned into a part job hunting, part (discount price) theatre extravaganza.

Tuesday: my dinner plans for Tuesday night had to cancel last minute due to work, so at 7:45pm I hit the TKTS booth in Times Square and picked up a 1/2 price ticket to Sweet Charity. (And yes- made it to the theatre with about two minutes to spare). Not my most favorite show in the world, but I do have to say that I was really impressed with Christina Applegate- the woman is very talented.

Wednesday: hit the lotto for Hairspray. Due to a post on this board I knew that this would be day two of the change in the Hairspray lotto- they used to lotto mezzanine seats, but as of yesterday the lotto is now for front row seats. I figured the lotto might not be too crowded for this one, and it was totally perfect- they had 18 seats, and there were 18 people in the lotto. I guess that counts as a lotto win for me? :) So Wed night I saw Hairspray, sat stage left front row, and had an absolute blast! Tracy and Edna were great, but I thought that the woman who plays Penny completely stole every scene she was in- and judging by the audience applause-o-meter during the curtain call I wasn't the only one.

Thursday: Rent. My cousin was in town for the day/night, and this was the only show that I actually had plans to attend before I hit NY. But even these we didn't pay full price for- discount front Orch seats via Ticketmaster. I've seen Rent before, but my cousin's knowledge of Rent was pretty much the fact that she likes "that Seasons of Love song" she hears all the time on satellite radio. I thought the Maureen u/s that we had looked a little too squeaky clean pop wholesome to be Maureen, but it was a great show- I loved, my cousin loved.

The older couple sitting next to us did not love, though- I noticed they didn't come back from intermission, and after the show my cousin said apparently the husband was making comments about not knowing there would be 'all this gay stuff' and such during Act 1, so they did not return for Act 2.

Friday: struck out with the Avenue Q and Spelling Bee lottos, so hit the TKTS booth again and picked up a ticket to The Light in the Piazza. Oh my god- love! I completely loved it, it's on my list to see again soon, loved it. So beautiful. I wasn't sure that I was going to enjoy it- waiting in the lobby before the performance I was the token "look, see- there's younger people here, it'll be fun" that women kept pointing out to their husbands. Seriously- more than one woman. I was starting to get a complex. :) But Piazza is just amazing. Love.

Sunday: Browsed the BC/EFA Flea Market. Hit the Avenue Q lotto for the second time and won a ticket to the matinee. I don't listen to cast recordings before I see a show, so while I've heard bits and pieces of various tracks, I never knew how brilliantly written this show is. Yeah it's got fun and swearing and naked puppets and whatnot, but the lyrics are so smart too. Tried to win the Spelling Bee lotto on Sunday night, struck out again. Did not attend the Broadway's Celebrity Benefit for Hurricane Relief that night either.

yep, Tracy Miller totally rocked... at the end, with her facial expressions and "I'm a pretty girl, momma." I just about died from laughing- she was so awesome.

Wow - you were busy! Glad you had a great time and thanks for the reviews.

Your RENT story reminds me of a time my husband and I saw it on tour - in front of us sat a group of four, relatively young (maybe late 30s/early 40s), people who were *not* having such a good time. They were very squeaky-clean looking, but hey who am I to judge, right? They kept giving each other glares and "oh!"s Until one guy sniffed out loudly in the middle of the show "This subject matter isn't very Christian..." Our eybrows went *pop* right up - and we nearly burst out laughing. Ah well. They left before curtain call.

I was at Bee Sunday night. I hate to say this, but there were some empty seats - decent ones at that, mostly in pairs though, so they probably didn't go into lottery. I guess there were no-shows or cxls.

I can't say I had the same experience, but I had a similar experience last week.I was on vacation and decided to see a few shows.

I went to the Tuesday 9/20 Dirty Rotten Scoundrels performance.Absolutely loved it!!!John Lithgow is incredible and so are Norbert,Gregory,Sherie,Johanna, and Sara.I got to meet The leading men after the show.I happened to be standing at the entrance when Norbert came out.He is a nice guy. Then I went around to the stage door and met Gregory and John.It was the thrill of my life to meet John.I grew up watching Footloose and the Manhattan Project and there I was face to face with that great actor.I had time after that to make it to the Hirshfeld before Sweet Charity let out.I was thrilled to meet Christina Applegate and ger her autograph. As I was leaving I said "You stay classy Christina" she smiled and the people around me got a kick out of the Anchorman quote.I will definitely see Sweet Charity the next time I go to New York.

I took the Broadway tour the next day.It was absolutely facinating learning the history of Broadway.I suggest it to anybody who has not taken it yet.It was a fun two hours.

I did something slightly different for my next shows.I checked out two of the musicals from the NYMF.First, I saw It Came From Beyond.Absolutely Brillant takeoff of fifties sci-fi.I loved Heather Marie Marsden and waited to meet her after the show. She was flattered that I waited to see her.

I also went to see Feeling Electric.I have to say that it touched more than any musical or play I have ever seen.Having had some bad times in the past six months, I could completely relate th the lead character of Diana(Played incredibly by Amy Spanger)Anthony Rapp and the rest of the cast were amazing as well. After the show, I met everybody except the young lady who played the daughter(Anneligh Ashford).I had to run because I had tickets to see Elton John at MSG an hour later.

It was an incredible trip and I can't wait to go back in January.I think I am going to see two Broadway and Two Off-Broadway shows when I go next time(I was thinking Sweet Charity,Rent,The Great American Trailer Park Musical, and mabye Altar Boyz)but I am open to suggestions.

Thanks for sharing your experiences, it was fun to read. And now, you lucky, lucky girl, since you will be living in wonderful NY, you can see so much more.

I love Peach for saying early 40s is 'relatively young' I'll take that any day.

Yeah I don't know if it was because the seats used to be Mezz section, and/or because the show is a few years old now, but the Hairspray lotto just barely pulled in the 18 of us that were there to fill the 18 seats, I was surprised.

Altar Boyz is so on my list of productions to see too! I am still doing the NY job search, so I figure I'll have a few days when I'm first living there and still unemployed to do some off-Broadway viewing. :)

Bee wasn't sold out either time I hit the lotto, I don't think- I asked about SRO tix after I lost the lotto on Friday night and it wasn't sold out so there was no SRO to be had. Which ended up being alright by me, though, cause if I had seen Bee on Friday night I would have totally missed Piazza!

Electric: what's the Broadway tour? Sounds like something I might want to check out.

At this point I'd like to see anything on Broadway but Rent. I mean dont get me wrong, I love the show. But its the only theatre I've stepped foot in on Broadway. I believe its time to expand my horizons a bit lol.

It's the Broadway Open House tour.It is a two hour tour that visits 15 theaters. You also get to go inside at least two theaters. On our tour, we got to go inside the Hirshfeld(Where Sweet charity is playing), and the St. James (Where The Producers is playing). It is incredibly facinating.I learned a lot about broadway I never knew. You can find out more deatils Here:
