My Reviews from the week of May 22nd#0

Was in New York on vacation last week. Asisde from the wonderful parties and events I attended, I of course had to see a few shows! here is what I saw and what I thought!

Doubt - What can I say?! Everything I heard is true. A devastating piece of theatre. I was literally shaking when I left the theatre. A friend says that he thinks Pillowman is better. Having not seen it I can't say. But it would have to be pretty damned good to beat out Doubt. I was my 1st time seeing both Ms. Jones and Mr. O'Byrne on stage. Incredible. Just incredible. The staging was also wonderful. Also for the short time Ms. Lennox was onstage, even though she seemed to race through her dialouge, she made an impact.

.....Spelling Bee - How wonderful was this show?!!! I laughed till I cried. I saw it on Sunday the 22nd of March. (Right after I saw Doubt so I needed a laugh). So much fun the way they make you feel like you are in a Gym when you enter the theatre. I was too late to sign up to possibly be a "contestant". If anyone here was there that evening, they experienced the little kid that got a really hard word right that floored the entire cast. Later in the week I attended Seth's Chatterbox and meet 2 of the 3 cast members that were there. Jose Llana and Sarah Saltzberg. Jay Reiss was also there. I talked with Sarah about the show and how they all reacted to this little boy from the night I saw the show. It was fun. See this show if you haven't already!

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels - Fun show. Kind of forgettable music. (Glad they gave us a copy of the CD when we got there) Although Mr. Butz has that Tony all wrapped up I bet. He was a RIOT. Was not thrilled with the sets and the Oklahoma number annoyed me in that they didn't seem to give the ensemble enough room to dance! The set pulled toward the front of the stage and the number looked kind of awkward. Was not super impressed with Sheri Renee Scott but she was fun. Lithgow was really good but the number he does about love creeping in fell flat because you really didn't feel that he fell in love with Sherri Renee's character. A fun show to see once.

Sweet Charity - Kudos to eveyone in this show. A knockout!! Having only seen two nominated performances for lead actress in a musical, my vote goes to Ms. Applegate. The sets were wonderful. The cast was wonderful and she more than pulled her own weight in the part. I couldn't stop smiling! And the sound design was also very good. I heard every note and every word from row U Orchestra. (I was closer for Scoundrels and missed a lot.) People were walking in singing and walking out singing even more. Have to say it topped my list this time!

So there you have it. My brief reviews. There is NOTHING like a show on Broadway! And I plan to go back in the fall to catch some new shows!
