I love what they did in the West End. They go for "sublte" rather than throwing it in your face. I just wish the theater owners in new york too more pride in the marquee and how much of an influence it makes, but they don't.
I think that what they ment by the show " yelling Phantom" wa that it was not clear that Phantom was playing there. If you look at the Majestic theatre it is qutie clear that Phantom is playing there due to the fact the two side marquees have the mask and one in the middle says the title of the shhow.
Also, as someone asked in the west end they do not give out playbills. They sell two programs. one is smaller and would be what we would onsider a playbill. In terms of what it has insde it. It has the cast bios songgs list ect. The other one is the same size and what we on broadway would consider a program. the difference bettween the two is what is inside them and the fac that the smalelr playbill type one coasts a little less then the typical progtam.
Stupid Moment - Do I presume when your talking about a marquee yout talking about a billboard - not a posh tent?
Yes Anon a very stupid moment!
I've got quite a few West End theatres in my fan photos if anyone wants to see more...

Yes in the UK we have 2 kinds of programs
1 is a the actual program which contains All the cast bios as well as the creators bios, The Song list etc, sometimes a history of the show (West side story's talked about the original broadway staging and Fames talks about the impact the TV show and Movie had etc)
They are normally £3 or £4.
Then we have the Souvenir Brochure (range from £5 to £10) these are fantastic full of pics from the show, write ups etc etc.

Although the Adelphi is a pretty hideous building.
Wonderful, wonderful!
To our theatrical family across the pond - your theatres are beautiful from the grand to the quaint! You should be proud.

I love theatres, as well as the musicals (and plays) that run there. I love my local one: The Mayflower Southampton.
The inside is even more beautiful and has recently been refurbished and had new seats installed.

Ive seen a number of show shere in the last 20 years. Its a great theatre and its great to see such a big house constantly getting full houses. Its got one of the best programes every year. Your lucky to have it TQF. The history page on the web site is very very interesting. x
It does have a great calendar, the big tours rarely miss it. I love when they have student specials (e.g. £10 for best available), but the producers of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and The Producers are being stingey so I have to pay full price! Going a bit off topic now though.
Being at university in Portsmouth means I can enjoy the Kings Theatre too:

I did panto at the KIngs in the late 80s. We brought the house down- part of the ceiling fell in on the audience one night and sent 3 people to hospital. The thaetre closed for years after that. There is a strong fight on down there to keep it.
It has just been refurbished, It is a nice theatre, I have seen Joseph and Blood Brothers there, as well as La Boheme and Jimmy Carr.
The British always do everything better. Look at those theatres *sigh*

To all the Americans drooling over the West End, can I say, as a Brit, that nothing matches the buzz of Broadway!
Its becasue the West End is a little spread out. Its a shame.
mpw - lets switch continents! Ya?

Well too bad the city of New York doesn't think that the Broadway theaters are landmarks and can just be torn down at will, or turned into churches.

My 'local' is the Bristol Old Vic, one of the oldest continually working theatres in the world, currently under threat of closure

The best UK theatre outside London.. officially wooh wooh The Manchester Palace Theatre
.. i kind of agree. If only theyde get rid of that awful frontage and go back to the original. It also has the worst reputation in the UK for its seating. Booking on Ticketmaster advise that all seats in the stalls/orchestra and circle/mezz are restricted legroom. The theatre needs a bit of work. I worked there in the mid 80s when it had just had a slight renovation but now it needs a major reseating job. Great auditorium, one of my favs.
The seats in the stalls are fine but they are a bit of a squeeze in the Grand Tier.I think the circle are fine and we dont really have any complaints about the circle its just the Grand Tier.
I love the new frontage of the theatre, it looks amazing walking down the road towards it.
The stage at the palace is also amazing and bloody huge.
