...wow. Makes me realize just how much the actual cast adds to the show haha. Meghann has a pretty voice- actually they all have good enough voice- but just.. it's so "meh". Then again, it IS true that the actual cast weren't giving the same performances last year either. They've definitely grown a LOT with time :) (they were still better than these guys though. I mean, Alice and Aaron at least were always pretty darn kick ass, even if they have gotten even better since)
best part of this thread is that it lead me to Jay Johnson singing "Where Do I Go"
<33 I love Jay! My mom and I have met/ran into him by complete happenstance through various shows 3 times now. The last of which was his first time on as Claude
He's the sweetest of sweethearts, adorable, and his voice is SOOO beautiful. He was awesome, and that's saying a lot because I'm a complete Gavin fanatic hehe

Posted: 4/27/09 at 11:55pmTotally agreed. That bunch may have been fine for Arena, but I don't think they're quite B'way material (maybe with the exception of Meghann). Maybe since the show transferred so quickly they didn't have the time or means to look for new understudies?

i am in LOVEE with his voice. and yes i was there the first time he went on as claude, and i saw him again on easter sunday. i'd rather not compare him and gavin since they are both amazing lol, but when i go see hair and the board says at this performance the role of claude... i dont mind one bit lol. i wish he had more stuff on youtube. he has like 4 songs that i found.
and yea sorry for the threadjack. it just happens man lol.

I think events like this are great for being able to hear the understudies, but it is also difficult with only the piano accompaniment and the lack of context to really judge them.
And just adding to the thread jack, but they also put up Holly Ann Butler singing Gstaad from Happiness and I am just remembering how absolutely beautiful that song is. She sings it really well too!

I don't know if I'd called "Gstaad" beautiful, but Jenny Powers performs the hell out of that role.
Anyways, I don't think it's wrong for any of us to "judge" them. There are a TON of people who I'm sure auditioned for their roles, and they are supposedly the best of the best, right? I think the casting directors are more at fault. This is what you get when you base off looks and not looks and talent.

I saw him as Shrek in Feb and he was fantastic. Superb voice that knocked "Build a Wall" out of the park on stage.
On topic, I think it is hard to judge these folks out of context. Meghann certainly has a lovely voice, but the arrangement of "Superboy and the Invisible Girl" felt off. It was almost like watching an audition, instead of a performance of the piece. I'd be curious to see how any of them do on stage in actual performance.

Posted: 4/29/09 at 10:22amWhile I have not seen any of them perform in the show, it's also important to remember that the odds of all of them being on at one time are pretty slim. They will have the rest of the usual cast to support them and buoy them up. That makes a difference too.

Posted: 4/29/09 at 6:15pmthey sounded excellent. Especially Jessica. I cant help thinking though that Heidi from Title of Show..she would be great in Alice's part.

Posted: 4/29/09 at 6:19pmEhhh Heidi would be alright. She doesn't have a rock voice. I really don't see her as manic depressive....she's very bubbly.

To be fair this was a concert so I'm tentative to judge completely what they'd be like in the show. That being said, when I saw them do this live I was not impressed with Jessica OR Michael, but especially Jessica. She's too young and played it way too comical. I do think she's talented but just not right for this show. I saw Michael as the doctors in DC and loved him but he let me down a bit as Dan. He was vocally very weak. As for Tim, I think he's good but he's shorter than both Alice/Jessica and Jenn/Meghann, which bothers me. And Meghann is wonderful. She was the one I was most impressed with; I can't wait to see her go on as Natalie.
All that being said, I suppose I'd be interested in seeing each of them go on just to see it...even Jessica.

I'm still curious as to why Mary (who from the reports I heard was really good as Diana at Arena) didn't continue on when all the others did.

Posted: 4/30/09 at 6:56pmTim Young has a crazy good voice. Kicks Tveit's voice's ass. But he def. doesn't have much of a personality - at least he seems very timid and shy - which doesn't help in selling the song as the character.

I disagree with the comment comparing Tveit to Young. Having seen Young twice, I think he pales in comparison to Tveit in almost every department.
Also, the more and more I watch the ending of the video, the more I start liking Jessica Phillips, but probably for the wrong reasons. While I think almost all could be improved, the only person in my mind who really needs to go is Michael Berry.

You're kidding, right? Tveit sings circles around him in both songs the clips show.

Posted: 5/3/09 at 6:00pmMary Mossberg who was the Diane understudy at Arena is the the female standby in the Papermill Playhouse's production of 1776 right, but I am not sure if that is why she did not continue on with the show to Broadway.
