"I'm looking forward to the day when none of this matters."
This will always matter. When you are in the spotlight everything about your life matters. If everyone cares about who Paris Hilton is dating, and how many babies Madonna is adopting - people will always care to find out that a celebrity is gay, just as much as they are pregnant.
Its news. It puts you inside their life. People love to be in celebrities' lives. Hopefully there will be a day with equal rights and where people look at it as less, well "queer." However, saying that people wont care about a celebrity comes out - that simply won't happen.
I do applaud NPH for coming out. I don't think it is wrong for him to do so, or silly.

I just assume everyone is gay until proven straight.
All kidding aside, he is a talented actor and very smart.
He kicked ass on Broadway Jeopardy.
PS Maybe Neil was bi at the time. (Regarding the British Girl statement)

Well I'm still shocked to read he was in RENT. I didn't know that. I really like him on "How I Met Your Mother" - he wears the nicest suits.
EDIT: Who's his boyfriend? I always thought it was TR. Anyways, I don't think he was denying the fact that was he was gay by saying "british women are hot" I know plenty of gay guys who can still say a women's hot, etc. And who knows, maybe at the time he was confused or thought he was bi or something? No one really knows.

His boyfriend is David Burtka, who recently starred in the 2003 Revival of Gypsy.
This was news to me! Haha, I never really considered him gay. I just thought he was very into his feminine side!
I adore Neil Patrick Harris. I'm so proud of him and will continue to watch him on one of my favorite shows, How I Met Your Mother.
Yay NPH!
I just wonder who the next Broaway performer to officially "come out"will be. It is good for the religious groups to see that not all of their favourite TV and film stars are straight and want to be married and have children. I come from a much more enlightened country where gays can marry. We would never have votes on banning same sex marriage here. I can't believe all the christians who are voting for such an ammendmant. Makes me sad.
"According to a thread at IMDB, Neil in the past has made statements that clearly indicate he was straight: 'I'm very turned on by British women. ... I'm very into Kate Winslet now' and 'I'm a hopeless romantic. I think that suddenly she'll appear across the room ... right then I'll know that's it.' Clearly, that was evasive and misleading at the very least."
Dude, I SO agree with your analysis.
On the other hand...
Neil came out not because he had to, but because he wanted to.
I am so on the Larry Kramer/Harvey Fierstein philosophy that we all need to be visible.
So where does that leave us? Either in the closet, or not. And frankly, I applaud Neil for what he did.
Go Neil!

As I mentioned earlier, Neil Patrick Harris definitely deserves congratulations. I've always admired his work in 'Assassins,' 'Sweeney Todd,' etc., and he's a riot on the CBS sitcom 'How I Met Your Mother.' Neil's phenomenally talented. At the same time, I don't believe in outing; everyone should be allowed his right to privacy (the possible exception might be hypocritical closeted politicians and church leaders who spew anti-gay hatred). I hope Neil's happy with being out now, but it's only one part of his life, and it shouldn't overshadow all his accomplishments as a terrific actor.
Believe it or not, but Neil Patrick Harris actually reads the postings about him on BroadwayWorld. He was motivated to come out in part because he got sick of reading rumors about himself and his significant other (whom I won't name) on all the internet pages.
Personally, I couldn't care less about the sexuality of NPH or any other actor out there. I judge them based on their performance, not on what they do in their bedrooms.
Allow me to clarify that what gay people do isn't just in our bedrooms. We also like to go on dates with our partners, shop with our partners, attend award ceremonies with our partners and live life in general with our partners, etc.
If it was only about bedroom time, there wouldn't be near the need to come out.
