Hmmm. I know David Stone is attached, but still, they've been planning the Off-Broadway production of this for a heck of a long time.

This is what the Times says:

After three years in New York, two and a half of them on Broadway at the Circle in the Square Theater, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” is closing. The musical, which opened on Broadway on May 2, 2005, after a sold-out engagement Off Broadway at Second Stage Theater, will end its run on Jan. 20. It won two Tony Awards and will have played 121 previews and 1,136 regular performances. . ... Second Stage has announced that Alice Ripley (“Side Show”) and Brian d’Arcy James (“The Apple Tree”) will play the lead roles in “Next to Normal,” a new musical by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey starting performances there on Jan. 16.

Next to Normal is supposed to start at Second Stage on January 16th. I'm pretty sure the wording is just rather confusing, but that while talking about Spelling Bee, Second Stage was mentioned and by saying "performances start there on blank date", they meant at Second Stage, not at Circle in the Square.

I'm sorry if I confused the issue with posting this item. The NY Times article was confusingly written.

Isn't it weird how things work out? Like, the timing of opening Spelling Bee and having Circle in the Square open at that exact same time. I mean, what if it was booked and Spelling Bee had to take the Belasco or something, what a disaster that would have been.

I doubt Spelling Bee would have taken the Belasco. The construction of the Spelling Bee set is pretty unique to the features of Circle in the Square, plus, there's the factor of size.

Anyway, yeah. I know the wording of the article is a little confusing, but really? That it would transfer before it even had its off-Broadway run? Hello, logic? You might want to change the subject line so as not to confuse more people. To what, I don't know, because there's actually nothing interesting or newsworthy about that tidbit at all.

Well I didn't mean the Belasco, but I just find it interesting the way things work out. Certain theaters just seem made for certain shows, and I find it interesting that Spelling Bee came along at the exact same time that Circle was looking for a tenent.

No, it is. But I'd like to think that a show like Spelling Bee would've waited until a suitable house opened up rather than taking one that was wrong for it.

What ARE you talking about? Spelling Bee can't even fill the 700 seat Circle In The Square, so why on earth would they move it to the Belasco?? I wouldn't be a bit surprised if the show was evicted to make room for this new one.

Well, SPELLING BEE used to have no trouble filling Circle in the Square for the first year or so of it's run back in 2005. After two and half years, though it's run its course and is closing Jan. 20th.

Rentboy is referring to the situation two years ago when SPELLING BEE was a new hit show needing a theatre and fortunately Circle in the Square just happened to be available.

Again NEXT TO NORMAL won't be going into Circle in the Square. It's opening at SECOND STAGE in January.

Some other show -- yet to be announced -- will be taking over Circle in the Square.

Let's do the smart thing and wait 'til SPELLING BEE closes up shop. It's too early to speculate what's to come next for CitS theatre. Let's wait and see.

Why do we keep bumping up a thread whose title has completely incorrect information?
