Hilarious! So they're making a movie in which a guy is married to Catherine Zeta-Jones but is having an affair with Renee Zellwegger. Since when is NINE science fiction?
Well, I'd pick Krakowski. She's somewhat of a name, but I do understand if they want the film to be full of stars in all main roles.
If not Krakowski, Zellweger is an odd choice, but I suppose she could do it. Or Nicole Kidman...
Claudia needs to be able to SING! If they butcher "Unusual Way" I'll destroy them.

"I very much hope negotiations with Renee Zellweger fall apart"
Amen.
I would love for Krakowski to reprise the role but we all know that's not going to happen. But please, Renee Zellweger? No.
Anne Hathaway is a trained singer and a great actress, IMO, so I'm sure she would sing a beautiful "Unusual Way."
Oh and why do people have the misconception that La Fleur needs to be of a "certain age"? As I said earlier Montevecchi was 50 when she played the role on Broadway, and remember the role was written for her so shouldn't an actress in her late 40s or 50s play the role? I feel that because Chita and Eartha Kitt played the role in the revival people feel La Fleur is in her 80s.
Wouldn't it be great if someone from the original cast made it into the movie? I'm sure Liliane Montevecchi is trying to land Le Fleur...
Unless I missed it mentioned here... Is Mary Stuart Masterson not up for anything? I thought she was good in the revival, and she's already got an extensive film background.

Can we have some more inventive casting for Saraghina? I'm quite tired of Latifah being the go-to girl for bigger black woman in movie musicals.
And I find her utterly mediocre.
Do I have to give up my dream of Carla being a belter with an available high C? Zelwegger is attractive, to be sure, but she's not a tall, leggy sex pot as Carla should.
I like the idea of Nicole Kidman as Carla.
And no, no, NO to Latifah as Saraghina. LostLeander, I agree with you. I find her mediocre as well.
Elaine Strich as La Fleur
Nicole Kidman as Carla (at least he leaves CZJ for a diffrent kind of sexy woman)
Someone mentioned Patti as a possible Saraghina. I think she'd rock.
Elaine Strich? As LA FLEUR? Uh, LaFleur needs to be able to sing, and Strich (as much as I love her) would destroy Folies Bergeres (if it's not cut).
I don't know if she can sing, but I think Isabelle Hupert would be an interesting La Fleur.
how about this:
Guido: George Clooney
Luisa: Catherine Zeta-Jones
Carla: Eva Green or Christina Ricci
Claudia: Nicole Kidman
Saraghina: Patti Lupone or Joanne Worley (ha!)
La Fleur: Faye Dunaway
Guido's Mother: Streisand or Midler
Lady of the Spa: Thandie Newton

Are we even trying to cast people who can sing the role as it's written?
How much is the score going to be re-written? I LOVE the score as is, but I guess I'll have to suck it up.
Blah.
Marshall stated that the roles will be suited to fit the actors.

How can you "suit" a song like "A Call From the Vatican" to an actress with a 10 note range?
Cut it? :P
Gotta have Sophia Loren somewhere in this movie or it just won't be right.
Please, Renee. I love you. But don't do NINE. Where's Jane Krakowski???
Oops..double post.
Thesbijean - where did your so called friend at the Weinstein company get all this information from, and what department does he work in?
Personally I'd like to see American Idol's Katharine McPhee as Claudia and Idina Menzel for Carla. If not Idina then maybe Minnie Driver.
My vote for Carla still goes to Marisa Tomei.
If not Tomei, Gwyneth Paltrow.
I can sort of see Renee as Carla, but it's true that she doesn't quite scream sex appeal. I think she'd do well with the vulnerability aspect, though.
Katie Holmes for Claudia? God, no. In what universe would Katie Holmes be the glamorous, movie star muse of Guido Contini? Katie SCREAMS girl next door, not movie star. And what noteworthy acting has she ever done? She's famous by association only. I find Anne Hathaway boring, and I'd still vastly prefer her to Katie Holmes for that role.

Why are they going with such young Claudias?
Renee Zellweger was everything that was wrong with Chicago, Kidman would be a better choice.
Toni Colette is with child and i would say that is why her name is not being thrown around.
As for Idina Menzel for Carla, why wish that upon anyone!
As for Saraghina: Patti Lupone , please god no! That part of the film would need subtitles, how else would people know what she is singing.
