Because this thread ate the posts, I'll repost:
roscoe, I know you clearly don't like Patti, but you CAN understand everything she says. I could understand her perfectly in Sweeney Todd, and people are saying the same about Gypsy.
I assume the role is being re-conceived for the screen adaptation. Katie Holmes just doesn't have the acting chops nor the screen presence to co-star next to an Antonio Banderas, Johnny Depp, or Ewan McGregor. And who in their right mind would consider Holmes his goddess of inspiration when your wife is Catherine Z. Jones and your mistress is Renee Zellweger (who at least has the presence that Holmes so lacks)?
I certainly hope Anne Hathaway gets the role even if Penelope Cruz is the most appropriate actress, if the part were anything like the stage version.
Did someone actually mentioned Idina Menzel as Carla?????? Not touching that with a 10' pole.
Somethingwicked, I think you're right on the money with Marissa Tomei as Carla. She definitely has the comic skills as seen by her MY COUSIN VINNY performance, and then there's the vulnerability of the role which again she really can do (IN THE BEDROOM anyone?). However, if someone screams sex appeal any less than Zellweger, it's Gwyneth Paltrow. Now, if we're talking about that family, how great would it be if Blythe Danner played LeFleur? She's too old for the role as well as Dench, but I really would love for her to tackle it.
My ideal cast:
GUIDO-Antonio Banderas, Javier Marsdem, Johnny Depp.
LUISA-Toni Collette or Nicole Kidman though Jones is great too.
CARLA-Jane Krakowski which won't happen so Marissa Tomei or Salma Hayek.
CLAUDIA-Penelope Cruz and Anne Hathaway if they're going for younger.
LE FLEUR-Blythe Danner, Helena Boham Carter, Meryl Streep.
STEPHANIE NECROPHORUS-Mary Stuart Masterson, Demi Moore, Donna Murphy.
OUR LADY OF THE SPA-Jane Krakowski.
GUIDO'S MOTHER-Sophia Loren
"I'm sure Liliane Montevecchi is trying to land Le Fleur..."
I'm sure she is too.
I love Liliane, but wouldn't she be too old for LaFleur?
Well, to be fair she is only two years older than Judi Dench.
I just made that comment because Montevecchi is famous for getting attached to her roles and playing them multiple times. She has recorded her Le Fleur twice and has played Solange in FOLLIES at least three times that I know, and reportedly wanted to play the role at Encores! badly.
Both her and Dench are too old for it, if you ask me.
I just can't see Dench as LaFleur.
Neither can I but apparently Marshall can.
I know she’d never get the film role but I think Idina Menzel could do very well, depending on if they went with a trashier overtly sexier version of Carla and if Rob Marshall could rein in some of tendencies she could sing it in a lower key for which I assume Rene would have to do anyway.
But why go for a trashy Carla? The style of the film should be European Chic, not trashy. As sexual as Morris as Krakowski were, they were never trashy.
Idina Menzel, Trashy, well yes! She could pull that off very easy.
As for sexy, not even if she was backlit.
Nicole Kidman would be an awesome Carla.

And for them not to put Antonio in this film is a disgrace.
Watch it go to John Travolta
Nicole Kidman needs to stay away from this film. She just does not fit. I know people are going to kill me for saying this but I would want to see Scarlett Johansson play Carla. I think Zeta-Jones is perfect for Luisa. She will be outstanding. Penelope Cruz as Claudia.

Sara Ramirez as Saraghina. Voluptuous and Sexy. She can pass as "traditionally" Italian and sing the crap out of the role.
Actually, Sara Ramirez would make a killer Serraghena.
I was thinking about and Demi Moore could also be a great La Fleur, at least she is the right age for it unlike all the other people mentioned for the role.
I hope the film doesn't use the annoying Italian accents used in the revival. I love the revival cast recording and its cast but I thought the accents were unnecessary.
Ramirez would be phenomenal as Saraghina.
kating effing holmes???? are you effing kidding me??? does anyone else remember her singing on that very special episode of dawsons creek. her "on my own" is legendary in my house, we still imitate it and laugh about it years after the fact. quite possible some of the worst, ear-splitting singing i've ever heard:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EzGl2jupOgI
seriously....
Forget her singing for a second, Claudia is supposed to be a woman out of the world, an ethereal figure that inspires Guido to no end, in the Grand Canal Sequence she plays Guido's wife, and she is his quintessential leading lady...Nothing Holmes has done makes me think she could pull this off.
At least Anne Hathaway has the potential even if she's not the person that immediately comes to mind. Holmes is just wrong.
i dont know anything about NINE, so unfortunately I cannot speak about casting from the perspective of who the characters are... all i know is, as a teenager in high school (8 years ago... yikes!), katie holmes scared the **** out of me and my friends with her singing on dawsons creek. we talked about it all thru lunch the next day. our ears still bleeding.
she starts out awful, but by the end, its like a screeching warbling i've never heard before.

Katie Holmes is too All-American looking. There's nothing worldly about her. I know it's called acting but just looking at her makes me think of Little House on the Prairie or The Waltons.
With the right amount of make up, Holmes could possibly LOOK like Claudia, but I don't think she could act (or sing) it at all.
So I just read on imdb.com that Juliette Binoche said in an interview that she was auditioning for NINE.
First of all, I think it's quite great that all these A-List actresses actually audition for this movie, it is not being offered to them on a silver plate (though I wish they had indeed offered to Banderas on a silver plate).
Second, I think Binoche is ideal for both Luisa or LaFleur. Since we know Jones is pretty much set to play Luisa, then I would love to see Binoche as LaFleur, she is actually the right age for the role (unlike Dench, Chita, and Elaine Stritch), has the right sex appeal, and that French touch to make the role work on the screen.
I hope they cast a Broadway actress as Stephanie Necrophorus though. I wonder if Mary Stuart Masterson is being considered at all to play any of the roles in the film, I was just listening to the cast recording and she makes an incredible Luisa even if no one beats Karen Akers' Luisa.
