#1NUNS On Broadway: What's the draw?
Posted: 2/17/09 at 11:03pmSo, now after The Sound of Music and Look To The Lillies, we have Sister Act heading towards a Broadway run if the London run proves viable? How about THE NUN'S STORY-The Musical followed by Fellini's ROMA (The Nun's Fashion Show Musical)? So, just what is it about NUNS that draw such crowds to Broadway? Someone even suggested quite recently, that THE TROUBLE WITH ANGELS and THE BELLS OF SAINT MARY would make great Broadway (NUN) musicals! Yikes! Comments, please! Now, be serious about this subject, no jokes, will have NUN of that!

There haven't been that many NUN based musicals on Broadway, have there??
SISTER ACT is the draw. Patina Miller. The strong material. Not the nuns.

Posted: 2/17/09 at 11:17pmThe Roman Catholics LOVE a good Nun show. Look at NUNSENSE, the markets where it did best are cities that have large Catholic populations.

Be a Catholic.
Be a Catholic,
If a Broadway show is what you want the most.
Go to chapel
And Joe Papp'll
Soon descend on you just like the Holy Ghost.
Once with Fiddler,
And Bette Midler,
You had to be a singing, comic Jew.
Now it's Catholic.
Be a Catholic,
And you may end up a star on Broadway too.
Be a Catholic.
Be on Broadway.
Sound of Music,
Agnes,
Nine,
Mass Appeal.
Be a Catholic.
Be a Catholic,
And you may end up a nun or priest for real!

You stupid goof...
You have no proof!
But I have my certainty!
Well, mercy! Glory me!
We can't all be fancy free!
Like you...
He took some wine...
He took some wine from the rectory...
It was a crime...
It was a crime he confessed to me...
And I promised, yes I promised I would tell nobody of his sin!
But now, now you want to use this evidence to do me in!

This thread makes me want a revival of THE DEVILS.
Sadistic, Bald, Lesbian Nuns are my favorite kind.

Posted: 2/18/09 at 7:27pmPianolin, you silly twit. The Sound of Music is ABOUT a postulant NUN who leaves the Abbey to care for children and return to the Abbey to become a NUN and then the Mother Superior directs her to follow her love, i.e. the Baron, and they have a wedding, cheered on by among invited guests, many NUNS. There are enough NUNS in TSOM that it more than just "has NUNS" it's "kind of ABOUT nuns." Stop this nun-sense!

The nuns weren't invited to the wedding in Sound of Music. It took place in the chapel in the convent.
If you have to ask about the appeal of shows with nuns, you will never understand.

Posted: 2/19/09 at 1:16amWrong. They were behind the cloister screen grillwork, which is a part of the Choir Chapter of the Convent Church/Chapel. They watched from behind the grill, which is what Benedictine Nuns actually do when public services take place in their convent Chapels. Do your homework. I have many friends who are nuns. They don't like the "Hollywood" image that portrays them on the stage or on screen. They think it corny and unrealistic. They did like the way they were portrayed in the musical, Look To The Lillies because it was more human and not so sugary and unreal. Lighten up. The question was meant in good humor because of the discussion of Sister Act, which is due to open in the West End.
