I know there have been countless other threads about what shows to see right now. But I've been racking my brain trying to figure out what 3 other musicals I should see besides the 6 I have tickets to. I live in AZ and I only get the chance to come out once a year. I started this tradition in '03. I missed this year completely and I'm going back January 10-15. Here's what I've purchased tickets to so far:

Wednesday:
Mat-Empty
Eve-Mary Poppins

Thursday:
Jersey Boys

Friday:
Empty

Saturday:
Mat-The Vertical Hour
Eve-The Drowsy Chaperone
Late Night-Evil Dead, the Musical

Sunday:
Mat-Empty
Eve-The Color Purple

I think 2 of my spots are going to Grey Gardens and Spring Awakening, but the third spot is up in the air. I thought I would see The Apple Tree or Company but my girlfriend doesn't like Kristin and I'm not sure I would like the whole actors also playing the instruments routine. Then I thought about Les Miserables, but I saw the show about 3 years ago with a touring cast and I didn't like it very much. And then I thought about Martin Short, but I thought maybe I'd prefer an actual story musical, even though the music sounds great in it.

If any one has any other suggestions or can help me figure this out it would be much appreciated. My favorite musicals are Cabaret, Rent, Big River, Hairspray and Sideshow. As you can tell I prefer musicals over plays.

Here's what I've seen in the past to give you an idea of what I see, everything has been on Broadway unless otherwise noted.

Spamalot- OBC
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels- OBC
Little Women- OBC
25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee- OBC
La Cage Aux Folles
The Producers with Matthew and Nathan
Wicked- OBC
Rent
The Lion King
Movin’ Out- disliked it
Little Shop of Horrors- OBC
Fiddler on the Roof with Alfred- OBC
Wonderful Town- OBC
The Boy From Oz- OBC
Avenue Q- OBC
Gypsy with Bernadette- OBC
Mamma Mia (touring)
Beauty and the Beast (touring)
42nd Street (touring)- disliked it
Jesus Christ, Superstar (touring)
Aida
Cabaret
Chicago
Thoroughly Modern Millie- OBC
Hairspray- OBC
La Boheme
Urinetown- OBC
Big River (touring but it was pretty OBC intact)
Peter Pan (touring)- disliked it
The Phantom of the Opera (touring)- disliked it
Contact (touring)- disliked it
Oliver (touring)
Les Miserables (touring)
The Full Monty (touring)
Oklahoma (touring)
Evita (touring)
Starlight Express (touring)- disliked it

Thanks for the help!

I would suggest A Chorus Line. But considering you didn't like 42nd Street, Movin' Out and Contact, you probably won't like ACL.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

What about Tarzan for the Sun. mat.? It's not the best musical ever, but it would be nice before a heavy show like The Color Purple.

I've seriously considered Tarzan, mainly because I loved the Phil Collins music from the movie. My only concern is of the rumors that it's closing. I'd hate to buy a ticket and tehn have it close on me. It's happened to me before and I never get the money back in time to get another show, it takes forever.

You just can't decide? Gee, you sound like someone I know who's biggest problem was where to go on vacation. re: I Just Can't Decide...

make sure you see both Grey Gardens and Spring Awakening.... for the third choice... i guess i would say The Apple Tree... I hate Kristen. However, from what I have heard from friends it is gonna be good, and with the cast that is lined up it probably has a good chance of winning a Tony.

This is how I, personally, would fill-in the schedule:

Wednesday matinee - Les Miserables

Friday - A Chorus Line

Sunday matinee Tarzan

Enjoy your time here, whatever you end up seeing! re: I Just Can't Decide...

Grey Gardens and A Chorus Line are two musts!

bwayondabrain- I've seen Stomp a few times most recently in April, so I'm covered there. Although it is one of the most fun nights in the theatre one can experience.

actor- I already have my tickets for Drowsy Chaperone.

C is for Company- I plan on seeing Grey Gardens, possibly for the Wednesday matinee, although I'm a bit scared that Christine might be out.

I'm leaning more towards The Apple Tree and Company. Maybe if I keep Grey Gardens and drop Spring Awakening, I can see both. I'm not sure how much Spring Awakening is worth it. Still confused.

I'd see SPRING AWAKENING before COMPANY. See new shows with original casts - those are the events you are going to remember and people will want to hear about years from now...

Christine Ebersole is unlikely to be absent...

I would say see Spring Awakening on Wed. Matinee, Company on Fri., and Grey Gardens on Sat. Matinee.
Whatever you end up seeing, have fun!

And NathanLaneStalker, could you PLEASE stop plugging Jay Johnson. You've mentione it three times in the same thread. We get it. You like the show. But you don't have to post three times.

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

Yes, I like the show but it's doing horrible in the box office and every penny counts. It's a wonderful show.

Try for The Apple Tree as your last - keep Spring Awakening and definitely Grey Gardens - highly unlikely The Apple Tree will be revived again and it is a stellar cast, their talents extremely well suited for the show.
