NY Trip

I'm getting ready for a trip to NY and my family put me in charge of picking the shows (thank God! Ha). I was thinking we should get in 2 Broadway musicals, an off-broadway, and a straight play. I have to keep in mind that my 12 year old sister will be with us, so I'm trying to keep it pretty family friendly. What do you think?

DRS
Jersey Boys
I love you, You're perfect, Now change
Lieutenant of Inishmore

Any suggestions? Would any of these be bad for a younger audience.

Good choices. I think DRS could be a little inappropriate for a 12 year old, but that's just me. There is some suggestive stuff. Other than that, good show, have fun. Hairspray is great, I only saw it once a while ago with the original cast, so I don't know if it changed or not. But when I saw it, I loved it. And I haven't seen the rest, but Jersey Boys looks great. Have a good time!

I think DRS depends on the maturity level. My 11 year old sister saw it, and got a little squirmy at some things(Ruprecht and a certain moment in Chimp in a Suit). And a few things went over her head, but she still was able to enjoy it. And I think Hairspray is definately a good choice.

Just a heads-up: Lieutenant of Inishmore features pretty graphic scenes of violence, torture, dismemberment, etc. I'm not sure it would be considered ideal fare for a 12-year-old girl.

I second the fact that Lieutenant of Inishmore wouldn't be a good idea.

Would a 12 year old really like "Jersey Boys" or "I Love You...." I think she might be bored.

I'd replace Inishmore with something more along the lines of Spelling Bee, etc.

I agree on the DRS thing. A little to risque for young kids. I love you, you're perfect... played Denver for a very long time but I never saw it. Seems it might be more for adults as it is about adult relationships. Spelling Bee is fun. Some mature themes but still a lot of fun. I saw a number of kids in their early teens there when I saw it.

Hello everyone. New to the site.

Barefoot in the Park (Cort Theatre)is hysterical. I saw it twice over the weekend. Patrick Wilson (Phantom of the Opera movie; Carousel; The Full Monty) is Excellent, with a capital "E". He makes the show. Also stars Tony Roberts (in a role he was made for), Jill Clayburgh, and Amanda Peete.

I second Barefoot in the park. Very sweet and funny.
I don't think DRS would be way to much for a 12 year old, especially if she is on the mature side.
Hairspray is very fun and a great one for all ages.
Maybe "The Producers"? Again a little risque but a lot of the humor might go over her head.
Spelling Bee (but again that has a few "mature" numbers)
Maybe something like phantom of the Opera- a good spectacle show...

I would go with Barefoot, Hairspray, and DRS for Broadway (don't know much about off-Broadway.)

DRS I think would be fine but definitely reconsider Inishmore.
I saw Phantom of the Opera when I was 12 and I was scared to death. I was so scared when I saw it 9 years ago that I still get freaked out, lol...do not scar her for life like my parents did to me :P
But I think Avenue Q should be fine, it's very funny.

In my opinion Avenue Q is a little too raunchy for a twelve year old (Internet is For Porn, You Can be As Loud... etc)What about Drowsy Chaperone? It looks really cute, I haven't read any reviews yet though, so who knows? You could always go for Lion King, cliche but it's supposed to be visually stunning.

Wow- Avenue Q is waaaaaay to raunchy for a 12 year old. I'm thinking more like 17 would be OK....Nice icon of Gene Kelly btw. I <3 him.

I took my little sis on her first NYC trip when she was 12, and it totally depends on the kid- we went to see Wicked, but Hairspray, then The Lion King, were the other choices on the shortlist.

Avenue Q: I wanted to see this, but thought that she was a couple of years too young for some of the language. (Now that she's 14 going on 35, though, I'd take her to see it)

Jersey Boys: would your sister be interested in the music in this? My sister at age 12 was a Britney/ Aaron Carter/ Hilary Duff/awful bubblegum pop music loving girl, and while it's not a question of there being "bad" material in Jersey Boys, there's just no way she would have sat through it.

I've seen Phantom...sorry, but not one that I would like to see again. And the Spelling Bee cast recording didn't impress me too much. I love Piazza, but I wasn't sure if a 12 yo would get bored. I'm please to hear that your 13 yo sister loved it! Maybe we'll have to hit that one up! Haha. And thanks for the heads up on Inishmore! Maybe I'll wait on that one.

Oh yeah....Ave Q! Seriously! I don't even feel comfortable with that one! Ha.

While I looooove Ave. Q, I don't think that'd be a good choice at all. I'm almost 16 and I still find it incredibly awkward to listen to the obc recording in the car with my mom (even though she swears one of her favorite songs in the world is If You Were Gay!) haha

Yeah, THE LIEUTENANT OF INISHMORE is a little too bloody for a twelve year old. But you still HAVE to see it. Oneof the best things I have seen in years.

i think for JB theres just cursing, havent seen the show, but thats what ive read
and as for the other shows, i think DRS is fine, i mean, im not too much older than your sister and thought it was hilarious, its one of my favorites!
and i also reccomend RENT as another possibiliy
HAIRSPRAY is great, and definitely see it! lots of fun!

as for off-bway, i'd say STOMP- it is incredible, ive seen it twice already! very amazing!

mmm I don't know about RENT. I also don't know how mature this 12-year-old is so she may love it! I think a lot of these shows depends on the person in general, not the age of that person.

She's very mature for her age...if you met her you'd probably think she was 14 or 15.
