I will be going to NYC this week and will be seeing In The Heights and August: Osage County. I was thinking of taking the subway to J&R on Thursday. Is this a worthwhile trip or can I get the same selection and prices of dvd's, cd's and electronics at my local Best Buy or Circuit City? Also, if I do take the subway down to J&R, what else is in the area that I should visit while I am there?
I've visited most of the tourest attractions including the double decker bus tours, Statue of Liberty, Central Park, Rockefeller Center, Top of the Rock, Christmas windows along 5th Ave., Museum Mile, Empire State Building, etc.
Any other suggestions on what I should see or do?
J&R is in the Financial District. Aint nothing else there.
J&R is close to St. Paul's Chapel and Ground Zero. It's also a short walk from Trinity Church Wall Street, Battery Park, and the South Street Seaport.
Also if it's a pretty day and you've got the time, it's close to the Brooklyn Bridge and you can walk across it.
Great ideas Jordangirl...thanks! Should I take the 2 or 3 train to Park Place? Which is safer? Also, is it a safe area around J&R and the walk from there to the Brooklyn Bridge?
You can take the 2 or 3 ~ either one. I think if you get out at Broadway/Nassau or Fulton Street (can also take the A or C if you go there) you're actually a little closer.
It's a pretty safe area. Pace University and City Hall are down there. (Battery Park and Trinity Wall Street are the opposite direction but still pretty safe. Lots of people around.)
Enjoy! :)
Both shows are great choices! Just walk around the enjoy the city. Hope you have fun!

Great choices! I hope you enjoy In the Heights.
Am I the only one who finds the Train System impossible to navigate? I guess im spoiled, because Bostons Train system is so EASY to navigate.

I personally love J & R and go there everytime I'm in the city, although I go more for the DVD store downstairs, which usually has at least one good sale going on. New CD releases are comparable to the stores you mentioned, although Best Buy's regular CD prices do tend to be a dollar or two below the rest.
I usually take the A/C or the 6 to get there and it's a very safe area. Do the Brooklyn Bridge as well, even if you don't end up going all the way across.

If you have an interest in history, the Tenement Museum is somewhat close to that area. And since no one else mentioned it, there's also the Staten Island Ferry.
Thanks for these great ideas. I've always wanted to visit J&R having ordered online from them many times and seeing their ad in the Sunday Times every week.
Thanks for putting my mind at ease about the safety of the area BroadwayJim! I appreciate it.
I can't wait to see In The Heights again. I saw it last September and loved it. I don't know much about August: Osage County but everything I have heard has been positive.
Thanks again for all your help and keep the ideas coming!
bump for any more suggestions. I'm leaving in a few hours to NYC! :o)
J&R? please elaborate? (obvious a music store...but why so special?)
One of my original questions was if J&R is a worthwhile trip or can I get the same selection and prices of dvd's, cd's and electronics at my local Best Buy or Circuit City.
Based on their website, the prices look good and I assume they will have a good selection. Do you feel this is a waste of a trip dramamama611? If so, do you have any other suggestions?
