I've never been to a NYMF show before and a couple of them sounded intriguing this year. Trouble because I'm a sucker for hot guys and nudity. Re-Animator because who doesn't love a campy horror musical.
Has anyone seen any of the shows this year and have recommendations?
And does NYMF do student tickets or any kind of discount?
#2NYMF 2012 Questions
Posted: 7/15/12 at 12:46pmThe shows cost $25. I don't know how much of a discount you want. Some shows will appear on TDF or may have a day-of discount.

Posted: 7/15/12 at 2:41pmThanks wdwfreak but I don't think I asked how much the shows cost because I can find that info online. I would like some form of a discount because even inexpensive shows still often offer student pricing.

NYMF is a not-for-profit theatre festival, Clyde, if you can't cough up 25$ (a MORE than reasonable price) to see these great new offerings then maybe you should just stay home.
Trouble has already sold out 3 performances, so clearly no one else finds the 25$ too objectionable.

Trouble, in spite of its many problems (amateurish staging, unnecessary dancing, weak performances from its non-equity cast members) is worth seeing for the 4 equity permormers in major roles, the 3 female leads and Daniel Quadrino who steals the show with his first act number "I Stalk You a Little". All of nudity (that I saw) was from the male actors. It's all fairly sloppily done and feels really awkward and unnecessary. But if it's wha you're interested in then go see it.
As someone else mentioned all tickets purchased through NYMF are $25. If you're a TDF member they have tickets to some shows for $14 (+$2 fee). That's how I got my Trouble ticket.

ChanceEncounter, I agree with you about all of the problems with the show but I don't think it's even worth seeing for the performances. I found the portrayal of the gay character as a crazed stalker wasn't the most flattering and thought it was actually offensive. It seemed like they wanted to make an "edgy" show but all they did was put in an overwhelming amount of nudity.
NYMF does offer student tickets for $11.50. They go on sale 5 minutes before the start of each show.

And I would have preferred a larger portion of the show had been about his character.
Yes the nudity was ridiculous, laughable and unnecessary and much of the production amateurish. But I'm happy I suffered through it for those four performers that I've already mentioned.

Not sure what I saw tonight. It was either pretentious babble or brilliant prose: Requiem for a Lost Girl, at the Theatre at St. Clements, part of the New York Musical Theatre Festival.
Folks from Canada delivered eulogies about a homeless girl who died on the streets of Calgary, recruiting local New Yorkers from Covenant House to help them tell her tale in poetry, dance, hip-hop and song.
Heartfelt freestyle rap from Daniel Vega, Anderson Footman and crew. Eerie classical dissonance from composer Marcel Bergmann and an orchestra of six. Think Eminem meets 200 Motels. Beautiful solo piano ballad called "Underneath the Greenless Garden" by Rivky Grossman.
And then lest you forget how real it is outside in the hundred-degree heat, homeless tucked away all over 46th St., setting up their boxes for the night & looking for change in their coffee cups.
only two shows left, then back to Alberta

So I saw Re-Animator tonight and it was AMAZING! If this doesn't come to Off-Broadway I would be tremendously surprised. The quality of production and the performances were great. Chris McKenna, in particular, is very attractive which I didn't mind during his shirtless scene.
My one regret is not getting a prime seat in the Splatter Zone. I sat through the whole show in that parka but didn't even get splashed. FYI the best place to sit if you want to get doused is stage left in the first row or two and also front row center. Hopefully I'll get to see it again and sit in one of those prime areas.

Posted: 7/22/12 at 11:41amAgreed with Clyde - especially about McKenna being super hot. My only complaint about Re-Animator is the score actually. It has great production values, a surprisingly good book but the score is mostly unmemorable and some of the lyrics are a clunker. It does seem to have a built-in fanbase though, and the show screams quirky Off-Broadway musical so I wouldn't be surprised at all if it transfers after its next run at Edinburgh Fringe.

So far I've seen:
It's On, Trouble, Baby Case, How Deep is the Ocean, Foreverman, & Stuck with Cutting Edge Composers, 6 in Concert, Part of it All, and Stand Tall left in the festival
The two standouts are easily Baby Case and Foreverman. Both had great casts and engaging plots. Foreverman is up there with Feeling Electric/Next to Normal and Rooms in terms of how impressed I was after walking out of the theater. There are some changes to the book (and the title, honestly) that need to happen as the show evolves, but it is a very well put-together production with two fantastic male leads that should not be missed.

I saw Re-Animator, Foreverman, How Deep is the Ocean, Flambe Dreams, Central Avenue Breakdown, Prisoner Dancer, Arnie the Doughnut, and Swing State.
Prisoner Dancer is the best of the lot followed by Foreverman and Swing State. Re-Animator, Flambe Dreams, and CAB were worthwhile but not to my tastes.

Posted: 7/26/12 at 3:25amThe soap fan in me can't help not asking--anyone know if Chris McKenna is the same Chris McKenna who played Joey Buchanen as a teenager on One Life to Live in the early 90s (and was the best friend of Ryan Philippe's gay teenager character, Billy)? He was one of the better teen actors they had...
