NYT: ‘You Had to Be There’ Review: An Irresistible Documentary

RE: the link to the "unlocked" article: "Someone unlocked this story for you. Log in to read for free." If login or registration is required, it's not really "unlocked" is it?

RE: the documentary: You Had to Be There: How the Toronto Godspell Ignited the Comedy Revolution... is not available for streaming.

So... Can't read the article, can't watch the doc. frown

You're the first to report trouble reading a NYT gift link. Are they going the route of WP? Don't know. They did change their policy recently going from 10 gift links a months to unlimited.

I don't understand complaints about articles behind paywalls when it's been endlessly posted how to go to archive or other sites that cross paywalls. I post to raise awareness about the article. Who's ever interested in reading the story can find their own way there if the one I provide doesn't work.

I believe you. A couple of reasons:

• A “gift” isn’t a gift if the receiver has to pay for it, regardless of the currency (try that option at a birthday, or a wedding and see how that plays out for 'ya...). I'm sorry that you choose to participate in perpetuating a tactic that's meant for data collection.
• Providing a link that’s inaccessible (especially when you haven’t included a synopsis of what’s relevant in the article) is more frustrating than making a choice to exclude the link to begin with, and using your own intelligence to summarize and credit the source.

RE: "I post to raise awareness about the article." I'm all ears... What do you think anyone might be be more "aware of" when the information contained in an article is inaccessible? ...or did you just want me to be aware an article exists?

Holy ****, too cheap to pay for an NYT Subscription. Too lazy to use a work around yourself. But you've got all the energy to argue about how you can't read an article. You're not helpless, do some leg work if you want to read the article or don't! Christ.

When I share a gift link, I double-check that it works in (1) a browser other than then one where I captured the link and (2) where I am not signed in to the site. Beyond that, I can't guarantee it will work for others, but removepaywall.com is easy for anyone to use.

And I do appreciate when someone here shared even just a link because often times it is for an article I have yet to see. Since I am in the UK a lot, I try to share relevant links to the Guardian and from theatreboard.co.uk that I think people here might like.
