Nancy will be wonderful as she always is. But the part is horribly written.

Good for her. I think I've seen most of her early Broadway work, starting off with Evita. She went on for Patti Lupone the night I saw that show in 1980.

Mama is a terrific role for a character actress; she's got a nice character arc, and an Act II number that's a showstopper ('Change Don't Come Easy'). It was earned Cass Morgan an Outer Critics Circle nomination for Best Supporting Actress. And I've seen her former understudy, Jennifer Allen, score big with audiences, too; 'Change Don't Come Easy' regularly gets one of the show's biggest hands. And that's DUE to Joe Di Pietro and David Bryan's writing, not despite it. I have no doubt that Nancy Opel will 'kill' as Mama, as she did in Di Pietro/Bryan's other musical, 'The Toxic Avenger,' for which she got Drama Desk, Drama League and Outer Critics nominations.
