I am doing my Senior Thesis on Nathan lane and It is for my English Arts Class, And for the art Credit of the class I am looking for a song that made him famous or a song he made famous. Could you please help me by giving me some suggestions as to what song I should do? Thank You
Unfortunately, he didn't make any songs 'famous', so to speak. He DID originate all of the Max Bialystock songs in THE PRODUCERS, but none were break-out songs that crossed over into 'standards' level (like "Defying Gravity" or "Popular" from WICKED, for example).
His previous musicals were revivals, so he didn't originate any of those songs.
You need to find someone else as Nathan Lane doesn't fit your criteria, unfortunately.
I know he didn't have any crossover songs but can you help me with something that you think he is quite famous for. He's one of my favorite actors but i need help and I am not going to change my topic
Again... there are NO songs he made famous. Period. Ziltcho. You could use a song from THE PRODUCERS, but none are 'famous'. "Betrayed" (from THE PRODUCERS) is about the closest you'll get and THAT isn't even a 'famous' song -- only known to Broadway fans, and not even... its more to fans of the musical THE PRODUCERS. Just ask a regular Joe on the street "...did you know Nathan Lane originated the song "Betrayed"?" Your response will always be "who?", "what is "Betrayed", a song?".
There isn't any song he is known for specifically, unless he does a duet of "Sue Me" with Faith Prince, which would bring Broadway fans some nostalgia as they both broke out of the 1992 Broadway revival of GUYS & DOLLS. But again... its not a song that most even knows, unless they are Broadway fans, etc.
Nathan Lane never made any song famous nor is associated with any particular song he has performed. Period.

I'd say "Betrayed" from THE PRODUCERS or "Ariadne" from THE FROGS are your best bets. But, to be honest, like Brody said - it's going to be difficult as nothing was really made famous by him.

He's only famous for being Nathan Lane and he plays Nathan at every opportunity. Sort of a male Patti LuPone

Nathan wishes he could sing like Patti
I would say he make "Hakuna Matata" famous. Everybody knows that song, and when people think of it, they think of the movie version with Nathan Lane's Timon.
As much as I love Nathan, BrodyFosse123 is right. Nathan is amazing, but he really isn't "famous" for one song.
Try using BETRYAED from THE PRODUCERS, HAKUNA MATATA from THE LION KING... or even GOOD OL' RELIABLE NATHAN from GUYS AND DOLLS.
Best of luck with your report and I bet Nathan would be honored that you chose him

Ok, like if we ask the average person on the streets, they are going to know the songs "Defying Gravity" or "Popular"???...I don't think so. If your teacher knows anything about Broadway, he/she will know some songs that Nathan has performed. I would also suggest "Hakuna Matata" or "King of Broadway" or "Betrayed" from The Producers. It is my understanding that in these kinds of classes, as long as you can support what you are writing about with facts, it is acceptable. A "famous' song is in the eyes of the beholder. Broadway audiences will know them, so they are familiar to someone.
I think a lot of mainstream knows about "Defying Gravity" but NOT the majority.
"Popular" ?? not so mucchh.
Mainstream what? I had never heard of the song "Defying Gravity" until I saw the show. Maybe on XM when I listen to the Broadway station, but no where else.

Don't disillusion yourself. Most of the world never heard of WICKED, let alone any of the songs from it.
I agree. Look at Sweeney Todd. Great show that is made into a movie with one of, if not the, top drawing actor in Hollywood and no one cared. If that doesn't tell you what the rest of the country thinks about Broadway nothing will.
how can you be the judge to say no one cared?
by making a Hollywood movie involving Johnny Depp and Tim Burton, there were thousands from the "mainstream" that wouldn't see a movie musical (and Sondheim) otherwise.
out of those who saw it, you have no idea how many were affected and now enjoy Broadway or Sondheim because of it.
Hakuna Matata is actually a great point.
I mean, everyone knows that song, and he was the first one to sing it. Go with that.

Hands down Hakuna Matata. Yes, everyone knows it and Nathan made it memorable.

Show me a person who hasn't seen The Lion King and I will show you a person without a soul.
Another vote for 'Hakuna Matata'. It's the first thing that popped into my mind when I read the original post. Hands down 'Hakuna Matata'.
I actually sold my soul so that I wouldn't have to finish watching The Lion King.

I have never seen or even heard The Lion King and couldn't sing Hakuna Matata if you put a gun to my head. But I'm a big [tos] fan, so whaddya make of that, scaryclown? Still think I have no soul?
Good luck luck, original poster. Nathan is known for a lot of things, bit singing isn't one of them.
You're right. I have no way of knowing how many people were affected by seeing Sweeney Todd. I only know that when I saw it here in NY, about a dozen people walked out of it when they realized it was a musical. The trailers deliberately did not advertise it as a musical. When word of mouth spread, attendance numbers dropped dramatically from the opening weeks. Alot of mainstream people have preconceived ideas about Broadway musicals and are not interested in changing that thought process. Hopefully, there will be many young people that keep the musicals alive forever.
Notice how the original poster said: "I am looking for A SONG THAT MADE HIM FAMOUS or a song he made famous."
Well, nobody has mentioned any songs that made NATHAN famous, rather than the other way around!!!
For example, Nathan Lane made a big Broadway musical debut splash in 1983 in Merlin, and he sang that beloved showtune ditty, "We Haven't Fought a Battle in Years" as Prince Fergus.
Go with that!
