Need Advice on selecting a roles.

Posted: 2/9/09 at 12:05amSo two roles have been offered to me by two seperate companies in two seperate shows. both shows are going to be great and im conflicted on which one to accept and was curious on your opinions of which to take. The Courier in 1776 or The Solider in SITPWG. See with 1776 I would get to sing a spectacular song and would have a larger role. However SITPWG is my 4th fave show of all time and how often does that show really come along an actors way ya know? What do you guys think I should do?

Posted: 2/9/09 at 12:16amFor me it would be Sunday, no question. Though, the idea of sharing a dressing room with 23 other guys does have its appeal.

Posted: 2/9/09 at 12:19amWell I would be upset about only having 3 women in that cast haha. Theyre both reputable companies here in the burbs of chicago. I only have a couple days to decide.

Posted: 2/9/09 at 12:44amPick which one will be more of a challenge and will make you work hard, picking the easier role doesn't really help you grow as an actor or learn about yourself. Personally, I would go for Sunday, only because everyone and their mother does 1776 at some point, and Sunday would really be something that requires a high amount of talent and dedication, as well as look good on a resume.

Here's the plan: you do 1776, I'll take your role in SITPWG. I've been in 1776 already and the soldier is a dream role, so hows about we work it out that way?
In all honesty, take the role in Sunday, no doubt.

Which role is more likely to lead to more roles? Is one theater/director a better choice? In which are you more likely to be seen by people who can further your career?
This should be more of a professional decision - not just a personal one.

Posted: 2/9/09 at 11:54amSince when is the courier a large role? He wanders on periodically and has one song (albeit a good one). Will you be doing the act II stuff in Sunday as well, or just soldier in act I and Hot Up Here? Dude, this is no contest. Sunday is some of the hardest MT music out there. Challenge yourself! 1776 will come around again.

Pretend it's 20 years in the future. Look back. Which one are you more likely to think "damn I wish I'd done the other one" about?
Personally, I'd go for Sunday, because there really is no telling when another production of it's going to come round again. But on the other hand, if I genuinely couldn't choose, I'd go for the group that had the most people I liked. :3

Posted: 2/9/09 at 5:06pmHonestly, you're such a douche. He asked for advice from a supportive group, which is more than you have.

He should be asking himself, first and most importantly.
And then his parents. Or friends. Or agent (if he has one). Or teachers. Or coaches. Or fellow actors.

"Some little community theatre show?"
Hoboy. You guys wanna take this one?

Well he didn't mention the theatre companies so I have no idea how little or big it is.
AND, by the way, it's not the smartest thing to propose this on the internet.
If either casting director and/or production staff members from the shows saw this they would not be happy.
Posting your deliberation between two offered jobs, for all the world to see, could be seen by many artistic minds as a foolish and disrespectful action. I promise you.

Charleston yes it is a community theatre show. Im 20 and am looking for ways to continue to hone my craft, express myself and do what I love for people who apreciate and enjoy it. In the place I live there are many great companies that in the past have even rivaled shows downtown and I mean that 100%. I asked for advice because normally im usualy dead set on doing one show and this time I liked both options. Kind of like the little kid int he toy store that wants but toys and has to choose which one. I have asked parents, friends, teachers and mentors and they are all very torn. So I came to people that I trust on this site because they are all knowledgeable about the topic of theatre which I love and in many cases know much more than I do whether it be from age or experiance and I value the opinions and advice of the people on the board. That is why I asked people. Many of my friends and my family are not as theatre savvy as me and know very little about the shows and therefore I figured there are some great people here willing to share their own two cents.

Lord, I wouldn't talk to my friends or family about choosing between roles. They have not so much knowledge of theatre and would be able to offer nothing more than a "do what you think best, dear". By coming to people who know the shows in question, you're going to get a view based on actual opinions, rather than just guessing and hoping Jr will stop boffing on about theatre soon. :P

Posted: 2/9/09 at 8:10pmLike others have said, pick Sunday. It is an amazing show that does not get performed often.

Posted: 2/10/09 at 12:09amYa thats what Im thinking Theatrefreak. If anything 1776 will come my way again even if it isnt as the courier I figure while its a rare show its not as rare as Sunday.
