Headed to NYC in late April and the trip will, unfortunately, be short. I've got tickets for "Angels In America" (both parts) on Saturday, but need a show for Friday when I arrive. I've already seen "The Band's Visit" (which I loved) and leaning towards a musical since Saturday will be ALL play.
Thinking "Mean Girls" or "Summer: The Donna Summer Musical" to lighten up the weekend. Huge fan of Donna Summer music, but out-of-town reviews seemed tepid. "Mean Girls" feels like another "Legally Blonde".
I've got no interest in "Spongebob", "Margaritaville", "Frozen" or "Carousel". "My Fair Lady" is a possibility. Could also do "Three Tall Women" or head off-Bway to see "Hangmen" or "Jerry Springer-The Opera" (if either of these extend into late April).
Any suggestions?

You won’t see better productions of Hello Dolly or Once on This Island. Both are highly recommended.
For something a little different, you could try the great immersive production of Sweeney Todd downtown.
Or try “In & Of Itself.” Yes, it’s a scripted performance piece - but it’s like nothing you’ve ever seen, and it’s sensational!

Saw "Hello Dolly" last Spring - though OOTI could be an option I hadn't considered. Thx!

I would say My Fair Lady. Lincoln Center always does a good job with these big revivals. Second choice would be Hello Dolly, but you have already seen that. It is a wonderful show. I would also say Iceman Cometh but that would be a brutally long two days next to Angels.
As of now, Hangmen is only scheduled through late March. It may extend for a couple more weeks but I wouldn't count on it being there in late April.

OOTI wouldn't necessarily lighten up the weekend for you, but it is an amazing experience with a number of outstanding performances, and not a complete downer. Plus it's only about 90 minutes, so you wouldn't be sitting for a two act show the night before your Angels marathon.

Yes, I've seen "Come From Away" (and "Dear Evan Hansen"
. I try to visit NYC once (sometimes twice) a year, so I'm usually seeing shows from the "current season". Not always, but usually.
This season just seems kind of lackluster (especially compared to last season). Loved "The Band's Visit", but the musical side is less interesting. "Mean Girls" is a possibility (and would certainly be lighter-fare), but I'm always on the hunt for a "wow" moment. And as much as I like Donna Summer (and LaChanze), I fear "Summer" will be a dud. "My Fair Lady" is a strong show & Lincoln Center is consistently good. I just wish the leads were more of a draw (but at least there's Butz).
The plays look stronger this year, but I need something to offset "Angels".
Thanks for the suggestions!

Posted: 2/24/18 at 7:02pmI agree with you about the plays being stronger. Usually I have no problem picking a musical to see but this year as of now I’m not seeing any new musicals on my trip (line up is hamilton (again), carousel, and miss you like hell which I guess counts). I’m on the fence with what to see for my final slot as I’m also seeing Harry Potter and children of a lesser god. I’m intrigued by Mean Gurls, OOTI is too pricey and the bands visit doesn’t appeal to me. I’m going last week of April so still have some time to read reviews. Fully first world problems though...

LOL - As someone who's seen "Hamilton" more than once, I fully support your decision. :)
