Need help with musical sound fx for "Tommy"

Pit director for a regional run of Tommy next month. Anyone have any thoughts on how to produce the guitar smashing sound effects in smash the mirrors. Would love to talk thanks - I'm over my head I'm afraid.

When I did TOMMY, the guitarist hit a completely open chord on the guitar, turned up the distortion as the chord rang out, and went crazy on the whammy bar.
