This show came and went in the blink of an eye last month in San Francisco. It was over-shadowed by people competing in Wicked lottery. I personally, am NOT a fan of this show, so didn't shed the $50 for a singing red head.
You wanna know the story?
Some orphan girl gets rich. The end.

Posted: 10/14/05 at 7:50pmYou're right. The show's good, but why bother with a large, Equity production? It's fine in regional houses, and that's how it's been.

Well, I'm pretty sure it was in San Francisco for a whole month, a slight bit longer than a blink of an eye, and I think it only overlapped WICKED for a week, so I don't think there was much competition going on.
The night I saw it there, it was packed, so I don't see how it could be considered to have been overshadowed in any way. And, well...you know...it's ANNIE. As great as WICKED is (I think it's a great work of art), ANNIE has been around for 30 years, spawned an enormously popular movie, has been on Broadway several times, and has surpassed mere musical to become somewhat of a cultural icon...I think WICKED's got a ways to go before it can go round for round, pound for pound with the little redhead.
Just being realistic.

Posted: 10/15/05 at 11:05amSee, most people are very suprised when they see this production...they are used to seeing Annie done in community theatres. I wish more people would give this professional production a chance. They might gain more respect for the show.

Actually this production is quite bad and it got the reviews to prove it:

One of the little girls in the show, Casey Whyland, is a good friend of mine. She has done several productions with me in Syracuse, and is incredibly talented. She's the one next to Marissa in "Hard Knock Life." She was in the production of Annie that I was in here, playing Tessie, which is the same part she plays in the show, and the three girls who played Annie, and another girl went down to NY for the audition to get experience... but she got cast, and everyone embraced her with incredible happiness here in Syracuse. She's incredibly talented, and a bunch of us are going down to Philadelphia over Thanksgiving to see her. THere's like 35 of us going... so it's quite exciting.
However, I'm really not excited to see the "Going to Like it Here" Coraeography... at the end, we did a bunch of interesting handwork and Annie was lifted up, and it was a great end to the number... this one is kind of boring... It's almost Kickline music... which could be done... but I wasn't impressed that they were all just standing there, while Grace, and Annie did a turn that looked like they had 5 minutes to coreograph the end of that number... I mean come on... it's an equity production... they should have eye-popping coreography... even if it is Annie...
I'm still excited to see the show.

Broadway Style, that's like...one bad review out of all the praise it's received from other critics this Annie tour has gotten.
Trust me, the critics seem to like this production.

Posted: 10/15/05 at 3:57pmthe production being bad is only an opinion style... I enjoyed it very much. the sets alone were worth the price. they were massive and gorgeous... one of the best touring sets out there right now...

haha, Broadway Style...if you're pointing to critic response as proof that this is somehow a bad production then your post is not only misinformed, it's lame.
I just read the review from The LA Times, and it was quite favorable, as have most of the ones I've seen, including the reviews from other San Francisco papers that you didn't point out.
If someone says to me, "This tour is bad, I paid fifty bucks and sat through two hours of dreck" then that is one thing. It's their opinion, and I can appreciate someone having an opinion on something they've personally seen. But, if someone says, "It's bad, see? THE CRITICS say it's bad", then that's just silly. In fact, I don't know why someone would do that, unless they had some other motive.

I'm sorry I didn't clarify. I personally did not like it. I linked the review only because I agree with it. Of course, it goes without saying that when I say "it's bad" it's an opinion and I don't expect everyone to agree with me-that's what makes for interesting conversation.
"haha, Broadway Style...if you're pointing to critic response as proof that this is somehow a bad production then your post is not only misinformed, it's lame. "
I find that offensive. Granted, I shouldn't have said it got bad reviewS plural without fully researching but I linked a review that sums up my feelings on the production to provide a valid opinion that I thought was acceptable in the course of message board discourse? I don't appreciate your "jadded theater-goer" attitude which implies that everyone who reads or places some stake in reviews is "lame."

The talent in the show is amazing. Every single actor is very good. Granted, I have not seen it with sets/costumes. What I did see in the early stages is very quite good and I am looking forward to seeing the show with sets and costumes.
PS. The dancing is great in this. They have added an entire section dedicated to dancing in NYC.

BS, I'm sorry that I offended you. Now that I know you've seen the production, I can understand your opinion and know that you're NOT just pointing to some random review, one voice out of many, and slamming a show for no particular reason. You're voicing your own opinion, and pointing to someone who agreed with you.
I don't have a problem with people reading reviews, and I don't have a problem with people putting some stake in them, either. I do it every day with movies. I see a bad review for a movie from a reviewr I like, and if I'm already on the fence about it, then I probably won't go pay ten bucks to see it. If I see a good review for a movie I wasn't all that interested in, it may get me to the theater.
What I don't like are people who point to some site like Rotten Tomatoes (a movie review site) and say, "See? Forty per cent, this movie sucks!" I think everyone who ever posts opinions on works of art on the internet should be forced to start off by saying, "It's only my humble opinion, but..."
So, it's only my humble opinion, but I had a delightful time at this production. And, no...I'm not the mom.

Posted: 10/16/05 at 8:30pmI just got home from seeing this show and it was great! I really enjoyed it and it was exactly like the production I saw in NY as a kid. Conrad John Schuck and MacKenzie Phillips both got entrance applause...not bad for LA audiences! I definitely agree with the post about the sets..they were awesome!
