Posted: 5/29/13 at 8:26pmThanks for the link. I am less thrilled with the Grizz makeup than before. She kinda looks more like the Witch from Into the Woods. And Deut looks more Sasquachy or Monkey-y than Catish.

Makes me appreciate all the details and complexity of the original designs.
After seeing the rest of these photos, it looks like they ran out of money.
And they're not re-imagined at all, or even simplified, so much as dumbed down.
An "Equity Waiver" Cats.
EDIT: I'm all for re-imagining a show like "Cats." But that means re-imagination, not the same exact thing with less money. Change the concept of the designs. THAT's re-imagination.
Maybe the cats all look like toys or figurines on a shelf or in playroom box. Maybe the cats all look like children's illustrations from books. Maybe they're all in black-and-white like impressionistic pencil drawings, with only minor touches of color for impact.
Maybe they are Grand Kabuki style, or like circus clowns, or maybe they have stage puppet counterparts to each of them.
Those are all "re-imagined" concepts.
Not less makeup lines and cheaper costumes, based on the originals.

"I think calling it a bus/truck rental look alike is a little disrespectful to the many hours of work someone put into designing the show. "
You asked for opinions. That was mine.
"An "Equity Waiver" Cats"....
And it seems like I'm not the only one to think that.

all that jazz... I'll admit too that CATS is one of my favorite muscials as well. It could be as much or as little as you wanted it to be. It was a family favorite, a go to show for me with out of town visitors and even dates.
The makeup for this new version looks fine to me. I don't have to be a purist about it. What would probably be a bigger issue for me is the sound quality with three keyboards instead of real instruments. Second potential problem would be actor pronunciation since I've listened to this cast album for so many years.

From the Toronto Star (2/4 stars): "Sometimes a show writes its own review and that’s what happened with the production of Cats that opened at the Panasonic Theatre on Tuesday night.
'We had the experience but missed the meaning,' sings the wise Old Deuteronomy at the start of Act II and I fear he hit the metaphorical nail right on the head."

Posted: 6/12/13 at 8:10pmI agree with Tag. Typically, Morrow is very generous when it comes to his reviews. Nestruck would not have been so kind and this production would not have received 3 stars.

This isn't really a reinvention, so much as a slight modification, to me.
The modification aspect is what is disheartening. I think if someone wants to re-invent the wheel and laud themselves for doing so they need to actually re-invent the wheel. Those photos looked like simply scaled back costuming and make-up.
If I had seen this production, I'm afraid the costuming and make-up would have left me sourly disappointed.

Posted: 6/22/13 at 3:31amAll of those costumes look like the same costumes with slight modifications between them. They've all got those ugly "scratches" on them. The wigs are god awful. Why is Victoria's hair so curly? Cassandra's makes her head look huge.
