Now I know it's not the original animated movie from Disney but wouldn't Hocus Pocus make a great show, live? I know Wicked already has witches but "I Put a Spell on You" is just meant to be sang on the great white way. Tell me what you think?

I'd like to see Mulan or BROTHER BEAR on broadway

I'm not sure about Mary Testa, but might just work wonders
Maybe Patti LuPone? I'm not sure if she'll go along with this...maybe Faith Prince, if she decides to become another Disney character? I think she would be awesome!
I do love Timessquare3's art on those faces from that first thread
Now, Mulan...that might really be something onstage...
I wonder if they can do something with "Bedtime Stories"? Or "Enchanted"?

*bump*...is this the one you want the posts on?
If/when Disney puts another musical on the stage it needs to be a spectacle. They need to go back and look at what made The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast such huge successes. They've gotten very far off the mark lately with things like Mary Poppins, Tarzan, Little Mermaid. While I enjoyed MERMAID much more than I think I should have it still isn't very good. In many ways it comes across as a cheap piece of theater with many elements that just don't work for it.
Properties like ALADDIN, CINDERELLA and SLEEPING BEAUTY might face many obstacles as far as staging, special effects and set design but they are the type of musical that will succeed. Not something like MULAN or BROTHER BEAR.

So the spectacle is what counts and not the substance? I'd rather see an amazing show with no spectacle than a show that is ONLY about the costumes/sets etc...i.e. Lion King, B & B.

And a lot of people thought that the underwater theme could be done - I didn't buy it, looked nothing like "under the sea." People also thought The Little Mermaid score alone could save the show - nope!
Aladdin, if they could make it look NOT cheezy for the flying carpet/etc., but I can only imagine some of the hot messes they'd get themselves into set wise ...

Perhaps Disney will give up completely and return Broadway to adults.
Thank you very much!
I still think Hercules would be the best movie to turn into a musical.

How is MARY POPPINS not a spectacle? The only thing that made that show even mildly worthwhile were the sets and the special effects.
There are three wonderful Disney musicals from the 1960's which would transfer beautifully to Broadway. One of them, Babes in Toyland, WAS a big hit in the early part of the 20th Century and features a fantastic Victor Herbert score with new lyrics by George Bruns.
Also Summer Magic and The One and Only Original Family Band feature songs by the fabulous Sherman Brothers and would be great as stage musicals.
Best of all, come to think of it, would be 1967's The Jungle Book, also by the Sherman Bros. Jungle Book would probably be the most likely to succeed since it has a similar setting but a score and story that is eons better than The Lion King.

I think Hocus Pocus could have HUGE potential to do well on Broadway.
I also would love to see Aladdin on stage. That would be amazing.
Another Disney movie I've always thought would transfer well to the stage is The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Again, isn't that what most said about The Little Mermaid?
..I just hope they don't use the same Tarzan design team ...

Yes, indeed, meant to be sang. Perhaps by Arnold Stang. Or Phyllis Diller's Fang.

Bob Crowley designed Tarzan. He is responsible for designing two of their successes- Mary Poppins and Aida. He also directed Tarzan, which was a disaster. As a designer, I think most of his work is unparalleled. As a director, not so much.
Mermaid's problems stemmed from Francesca Zambello's hideous direction (why her? No seriously, WHY HER?) and the ugly, cheap, sets and costumes they got (remember the bongs?).

I quite agree! I'd love to see CINDERELLA or even SLEEPING BEAUTY on Broadway, but it'd be very difficult to do...unless they take a whole new approach. I'm sure with an upstanding creative team, anything is possible.
